Topsoil and Materials in Eagle Mountain

What Eagle Mountain lots need from a load of dirt

If your house is newer, the dirt out back is probably not topsoil. USU's notes on Eagle Mountain point out that builders often strip the topsoil or bring subsoil up to the surface, and heavy equipment packs it hard. Roots cannot get air or water in that. Sod rolled out on it looks fine for a month, then browns out once summer heat sets in. A few inches of good screened topsoil fixes most of that.

The native ground here is alkaline, and toward City Center it runs saltier than in the Ranches. That is a good reason to bring in clean topsoil for lawn and beds instead of fighting what the builder left behind. USU also suggests a soil test through its Analytical Labs if one spot keeps failing. For patios, sheds and court pads, road base and fill dirt do the heavy work under the surface.

We sell topsoil, screened topsoil, landscape rock, fill dirt and road base. Ordering is simple. Call or text us with what you need and roughly how much. You can pick it up at our yard in Provo, or we drop it off at your Eagle Mountain address and bill it at the location. If you are not sure how much to get, send us the size of the area and we will help you work it out.

Eagle Mountain is two climates in one city, the milder Ranches by the Lake Mountains and the colder City Center out toward Fairfield, with open Cedar Valley wind, metered city water and a one-year clock on new front yards.

Know your Eagle Mountain ground

Elevation
About 4,885 feet
Ground
Alkaline, well-drained native ground that builders often leave stripped and packed hard, running saltier toward City Center
Secondary irrigation
there is no citywide secondary system, so yards run on metered city water, and lawns may not be watered from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Growing season
USDA zone 6a to 7a, with cold pockets that act colder, last frost around May 15 on the Ranches side and as late as June 7 near City Center
Wall permits
In Eagle Mountain a retaining wall over 4 feet tall, counting the 30-inch footing depth, needs a building permit and engineered drawings, and no wall may rise more than 6 feet above finished grade
Where we work
the Ranches, City Center, SilverLake, Overland, Spring Run, White Hills, Cedar Pass Ranch, Lone Tree

The Eagle Mountain challenges

Dirt problems on Eagle Mountain lots

Builder subsoil under the sod

A lot of Eagle Mountain lawns struggle because they were laid on packed subsoil. The roots stay shallow, water runs off, and the meter keeps spinning while the grass still looks thirsty. Loosening the ground and adding screened topsoil gives the roots somewhere to go.

Saltier ground near City Center

USU notes that the lower City Center soils carry more salt than the Ranches. Salty, alkaline ground is hard on lawns and on many shrubs. Clean topsoil in the root zone gives new plants a better start, and picking salt-tolerant plants handles the rest.

Fine soil that blows away

Bare topsoil on an open Eagle Mountain lot will not stay put through a windy spring. Wind here has filled the air with enough dust to shut down roads. Have it delivered close to when you plan to plant or lay sod, and cover beds with landscape rock.

The wrong rock in the wrong place

Rounded rock rolls on a slope, and small pea gravel can scatter in high wind. Angular landscape rock locks together and stays where you put it. Under patios and court slabs, road base belongs there, not topsoil, compacted in layers.

The J&H approach

How ordering works for Eagle Mountain

1 How we handle it

Call or text your order

Tell us the material and about how much you need. If you are not sure, send the length and width of the area and what it is for, like sod, beds or a patio base, and we will help you pick a load size.

2 How we handle it

Pick up or get it dropped off

You can grab it at our Provo yard with your own truck or trailer. Or we drop it at your Eagle Mountain home and bill it at the location. Tell us where you want the pile so it is not blocking the garage or the sidewalk.

3 How we handle it

Match the material to the job

Screened topsoil goes under sod and in beds. Fill dirt raises low spots and builds up grade. Road base goes under patios, walks and court slabs. Landscape rock covers drip beds and stays put in the wind. We help you match each one to the job.

Eagle Mountain questions

Topsoil and Materials in Eagle Mountain: what people ask

Do you deliver topsoil to Eagle Mountain?
Yes. Call or text to order and we drop it at your Eagle Mountain address, billed at the location. If you have a truck or trailer, you can also pick it up at our yard in Provo. Let us know where you want it dumped so it stays off the street.
What is the difference between topsoil and screened topsoil?
Screened topsoil has been run through a screen to pull out rocks, roots and clods. It spreads smooth and works best under new sod and in planting beds. Regular topsoil costs less and is fine for filling in or raising an area that will get more soil on top.
How much topsoil do I need for new sod?
It depends on what is under it. On packed Eagle Mountain builder dirt, plan on a few inches over ground that has been loosened first. Send us the size of the area and we will help you figure the amount, so you are not paying for a second trip.
