Topsoil and Materials in Highland

What Highland ground needs

Highland's soil is a mix, and that is why topsoil orders here vary so much. The bench is old Lake Bonneville delta, so some yards sit on clean, gravelly sand that drains so fast a lawn dries out between waterings. Other yards, and sometimes other corners of the same yard, sit on silty ground that holds water and packs hard. Along the mountain edge, the fan soil runs heavy on silt and fine sand.

On a big lot the amount adds up fast. A new lawn area, a row of raised beds and fill behind a short wall can call for several truckloads. Getting the right material for each spot matters more than getting the cheapest one. Screened topsoil goes where roots grow. Fill dirt builds up grade. Road base goes under patios, courts and walks, and landscape rock covers beds and dry corners.

Ordering takes a call or a text. Tell us what you need and roughly how much. Pick it up at our Provo yard, or we drop it at your place, anywhere from Mountain Ridge to Highland Town Center. You are billed at pickup or drop-off. If you are not sure how much to order, send us the size of the area and we will help you work it out.

Highland is the big-lot town on the bench above Lehi and American Fork, where many lots are an acre or close to it, courts and horse areas share the yard, deer browse the gardens and every retaining wall goes through the city first.

Know your Highland ground

Elevation
About 4,876 feet
Ground
Lake Bonneville delta ground on the Highland bench, with gravelly pockets that drain fast next to silty pockets that hold water, and silty fan soil along the mountain edge
Secondary irrigation
Highland's pressurized irrigation runs April 15 to October 15 on even and odd days with no Sunday watering, the meters are in, and tiered billing is coming
Growing season
USDA zone 6a to 7a depending on the lot, last frost late April or later, since Highland sits higher than the valley floor
Wall permits
In Highland every retaining wall needs city approval, and a wall 4 feet or taller, or one carrying a surcharge, needs a building permit with a stamped engineered plan and a drainage plan

The Highland challenges

Soil problems on Highland lots

Sand that will not hold water

On the gravelly parts of the bench, water runs straight down past the roots. A thin layer of topsoil dries out in a single July week. Lawns and beds there need more depth of good soil, and on a metered system that depth saves water for years.

Silty spots that pack and pond

Silty bench and fan soil seals up when it is driven on or worked wet. Topsoil spread right on top makes a layer where water stops and sits. Loosen the ground first so the two layers blend at the line, and roots can push through.

Wrong material for the job

Topsoil under a patio settles. Road base in a flower bed grows nothing. Fill dirt under sod gives roots little to feed on. Tell us where each load is going and we will point you to the right product, so you do not pay to haul the wrong one back out.

Fill on a slope

Fill added to a Highland slope changes the grade, and graded slopes here are capped at 3 to 1. Fill piled behind a wall can also add load the wall was not built for. Ask before you dump fill near a slope or a wall, and we will tell you what to watch for.

The J&H approach

How ordering works in Highland

1 How we handle it

Call or text your order

Tell us the product, roughly how much and where it is going. If you send the size of the area and the depth you want, we can help you figure the amount. Not sure which product fits? Ask, and we will tell you straight.

2 How we handle it

Pick up in Provo or get it delivered

Swing by our Provo yard with a truck or trailer, or we drop the load at your Highland home. Tell us where you want the pile so it lands close to where it is going, off the street and clear of sprinkler heads.

3 How we handle it

Billed at the location

You are billed at pickup or at drop-off. If you also want the material spread, graded or worked into a bigger project, J&H can quote that job too, and Jackson will come look at the yard.

Highland questions

Topsoil and Materials in Highland: what people ask

What topsoil do you sell for Highland yards?
We sell topsoil and screened topsoil, plus landscape rock, fill dirt and road base. Screened topsoil has the rocks and clods taken out, so it spreads smooth for lawns and beds. Call or text and tell us what you are planting, and we will point you to the right one.
Can you deliver to Highland?
Yes. We drop loads off across Highland, or you can pick up at our Provo yard. Tell us where to set the pile, ideally a driveway spot close to where you will use it, and keep the drop area clear of cars and sprinkler heads.
How much topsoil do I need?
Measure the length and width of the area and decide the depth. Lawns and beds need more than a thin top dressing, and fast-draining sandy spots on the bench do better with extra. Text us the numbers and we will help you figure out the order.
