Backyard Remodel in Springville

A premium Springville backyard built for the lot you have

A big backyard remodel in Springville looks different depending on the street. On the east bench the draw is the view across Utah Valley, so the patio, the pool deck and the fire area have to sit where you can see it. That often means terracing the slope and building walls. Down on the west side the yard is flatter and often bigger, but heavy clay decides how every slab and footing gets built.

Every remodel here also has to deal with Springville water. Secondary irrigation runs at high pressure from about mid-April to mid-October, and it carries grit. A new yard with lawn, beds, planters and maybe a pool deck needs a fresh irrigation plan with a filter and a pressure reducer, not a few new heads tacked onto an old system that was already struggling.

We plan the whole remodel as one job. Grading and walls first, then the pool area, patios, outdoor kitchen, fire and pergola, then lighting, irrigation and planting. One crew builds it, and Jackson checks it at each stage. On a bench lot near the canyon, we also plan for deer, the later spring frost and the evening air that slides down Hobble Creek Canyon.

Springville, Art City, spreads from about 4,400 feet by Utah Lake up past 5,600 feet on the east bench, so a west-side clay yard and a bench view-lot are different soil, drainage and frost worlds, and one quote does not fit both.

Know your Springville ground

Elevation
About 4,551 feet
Ground
Heavy Lake Bonneville lakebed clay on the valley floor, gravelly cobble-filled fan soil up on the east bench, and Hobble Creek bottoms with a high water table
Secondary irrigation
Springville runs its own city pressurized irrigation, on around April 15 and off around October 15, and the high line pressure means most systems need a filter and a pressure reducer
Growing season
USDA zone 6b to 7a, last frost early-to-mid May on the bench
Wall permits
In Springville a retaining wall over 4 feet, footing included, needs a permit and engineering, and east-bench lots can fall in the Hillside Overlay with added grading rules
Where we work
the Hobble Creek corridor, Spring Creek, the east bench and Canyon Road, East Hobble Creek, the west fields near Utah Lake, the Art City downtown

The Springville challenges

What a Springville remodel has to get right

Bench slopes and the view

A view lot rarely has flat ground. Getting a big patio or pool deck on it means cutting, filling and building walls, and walls over 4 feet with the footing need a permit and engineering in Springville. Plan it wrong and you lose the view behind a wall, or end up with a patio that tilts.

Heavy features on west-side clay

Stone outdoor kitchens, fire walls and pool decks put a lot of weight on lakebed clay. Clay moves with water, so footings and slabs need to go deeper and stay drained. Otherwise counters crack at the seams and the coping around the pool starts to separate.

Deer, frost and planting up high

On the bench, deer come through in winter and the safe date for tender plants runs into May. A premium planting plan copied from a valley-floor yard can lose a good chunk of its plants in the very first year.

The J&H approach

How we build a Springville backyard remodel

1 How we handle it

Terrace for the view

On bench lots we step the yard into level terraces with drained walls, and put the main living area where the view is best. We engineer and permit the walls that need it, so the build does not stall at the city.

2 How we handle it

Deep footings on clay

On clay lots, kitchens, fire features and pool decks get over-dug, fabric-lined, compacted footings and drained bases. Grades fall away from the house, so water does not collect under the new hardscape or along the foundation.

3 How we handle it

One plan, built in order

We draw the full yard and build it in the right order, so pipe and power go in before pavers and nothing gets torn up twice. You get one crew and one person to call from the first dig to the last light.

Springville questions

Backyard Remodel in Springville: what people ask

Can you build a pool area on a sloped Springville lot?
Yes. We terrace the slope and build engineered walls where needed, then lay out the pool deck, fencing and planting around it. Pool fencing and taller walls both have city rules, so we confirm current requirements with Springville before we build.
When should I start planning a remodel?
Fall and winter are good times to plan. That leaves room for design, engineering and permits, so the build can start as the ground thaws and the new irrigation is ready before Springville charges its lines in April.
Do you handle outdoor lighting?
Yes. Lighting is part of the plan from the start: path lights, step lights, uplights on trees and walls, and lights in the pergola. Wires run in sleeves under the hardscape, so nobody has to cut into new pavers later to add a light.
Can a bench yard have a pool and still keep the view?
Usually. We set the pool deck on a terrace below the main patio, or keep walls and fencing low and open on the view side. Glass or open metal pool fencing can meet the rules without blocking the valley, and we confirm current requirements with the city.

Your dream yard. Done right. Done on time.
