Artificial Turf in Woodland Hills

Turf where water costs the most

Every lawn in Woodland Hills runs on metered city culinary water, because the city has no secondary irrigation system. The General Plan suggests replacing Kentucky bluegrass and shrinking turf, and by its numbers a 10,000 square foot bluegrass lawn drinks about 250,000 gallons in a 25-week season. Swapping a play lawn for synthetic turf takes that area off the sprinkler schedule for good.

It is not a fit everywhere, though. Turf is plastic, so we keep it out of the first 5 feet around the house, where the city's fire guide calls for non-combustible materials. Summer highs in the upper 80s and low 90s make it hot in full sun. And on a slope, turf needs a solid, well-drained base and firm edges so snowmelt does not wash the base out from under it.

Where it does fit, it works well: a flat play area for kids, a dog run, a putting green with a view toward Timpanogos, or the ground around a sport court. Deer and elk will not eat it, which is more than you can say for most plants up here. We confirm current rules with the city and your HOA before install.

Woodland Hills rises about 1,200 feet from its lowest homes to its highest, most lots run on septic, every yard drinks metered city water and the whole town is treated as wildland-urban interface, so a yard here gets planned around slope, drain field and fire before anything else.

Know your Woodland Hills ground

Elevation
About 5,000 to over 6,200 feet
Ground
Rocky, well-drained foothill soil on steep slopes, with mapped landslide, alluvial-fan and fault hazards in parts of town
Secondary irrigation
Woodland Hills runs no secondary irrigation, so every yard waters on metered city culinary water
Growing season
USDA zone 6b, last frost mid to late May
Wall permits
In Woodland Hills a retaining wall over 4 feet, or steeper than 2 to 1, needs engineering and inspection, and a lot with overall slope over 15 percent needs a geotech report

The Woodland Hills challenges

Turf problems on Woodland Hills lots

Rocky ground under the base

The foothill soil here is rocky, so the base starts with digging out loose rock and leveling. Turf laid over bumps and stones shows every one of them. We build a compacted base of crushed rock so the surface stays smooth year after year.

Snowmelt on slopes

Snow lingers longer here, and spring melt moves across a slope fast. Without drainage under the turf and a stable edge, water can carry base material downhill and leave soft spots. We grade and edge for that before the turf goes down.

Heat in full sun

Synthetic turf gets hot on summer afternoons. Placing it where the house or trees give some afternoon shade, or picking a cooler infill, makes it easier on bare feet and paws in July. A quick rinse with the hose cools it down for a while, too.

Septic drain fields

A turf base needs compaction, and compacting over a drain field can damage it. We locate the septic system first and keep the turf base off the field, or plan a different surface, like native planting, for that part of the yard.

The J&H approach

How we install turf here

1 How we handle it

Pick the right spots

We put turf where it earns its keep: play areas, dog runs, putting greens and the ground around courts. Steep slopes and fire-zone ground near the house usually do better as rock or native planting, and we will tell you so.

2 How we handle it

Build a base that drains

We strip sod and rock, grade, add compacted base in layers and set edges that hold. On sloped areas we add drainage so melt water moves through the base instead of washing it out each spring.

3 How we handle it

Install for pets and play

For dogs we use turf and infill made for pets, over a base that rinses clean. For putting greens we shape the breaks and fringe so the green plays true and looks like it belongs in the yard.

Woodland Hills questions

Artificial Turf in Woodland Hills: what people ask

Does artificial turf make sense in Woodland Hills?
For play areas, dog runs and putting greens, often yes, since lawn here runs on metered city water. We keep turf out of the first 5 feet of the house, per the city's fire guide, and away from steep areas better suited to native plants.
Will snow ruin synthetic turf?
No. Turf handles snow fine and drains as it melts. Use a plastic shovel or let it melt on its own, and skip metal blades and harsh ice melt. A good base keeps the meltwater from washing out underneath it in spring.
Are there rebates for turf in Woodland Hills?
We do not know of one we can promise. The state landscape program only pays in cities that adopted its standards, and we have not confirmed Woodland Hills is one of them. We check with the city and your HOA on rules and any programs before you buy.
