Sprinkler Repair in American Fork

American Fork sprinklers run on the city's schedule

American Fork runs its own pressurized irrigation system for outdoor water. It turns on around April 15 and off around October 15, and the city tells owners to blow out their lines in mid-October. Right now even addresses water Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday, odd addresses water Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and Saturday is for spot watering only. The city adjusts that schedule in dry years, so we check it each spring.

The city has put meters on its pressurized irrigation connections and is phasing in a tiered rate based on lot size and use. A stuck valve or a broken head that ran all summer used to cost the lawn. On a meter, it starts showing up as money. Fixing a leak in May is a lot cheaper than paying for it until the October shutoff.

The water itself is tough on parts. It is untreated surface water that the city screens, and the city suggests a filter at the home to protect the heads. It is also hard water, so mineral scale builds up in heads and drip emitters over time. We clean or swap clogged parts, add or service the filter, and set run times that fit your soil.

American Fork sits at the foot of Timpanogos where the river comes out of the canyon, so one town runs from soft lakebed silt that ponds and settles on the flats to boulder ground at the canyon mouth, all watered on the city's metered PI schedule.

Elevation
About 4,613 feet
Ground
Lake Bonneville silt and clay on the flat plain that settles and ponds, river gravel under it at depths that vary, and boulder-rich fan ground at the mountain front
Secondary irrigation
American Fork runs its own metered pressurized irrigation from April 15 to October 15, with even and odd watering days that the city adjusts in dry years
Growing season
USDA zone 6a to 7a, depending on the lot, last frost around late April
Wall permits
In American Fork any fence or wall over 48 inches needs a plan and a permit from the Building Division (City Code 17.5.115), and lots on the city's hazard map can need a soils report

The American Fork challenges

Sprinkler trouble we fix in American Fork

Clogged heads and drip lines

Screened surface water still carries grit, and hard water leaves scale behind. Over a few seasons, nozzles spray crooked and drip emitters quit. We flush the lines, clean the filter and replace the heads and emitters that are past saving.

Runoff on lakebed silt

Silt and clay take water slowly. One long run on your watering day puts water down faster than the ground can take it, and the rest heads for the gutter. We split runs into shorter cycles so it soaks in.

Leaks that run all season

A cracked fitting under the lawn can leak for months before it shows. With meters on the connections, that water now has a cost. We pressure test each zone and track down the leaks that hide under sod or behind a retaining wall.

Missing the fall shutoff

Once the city shuts the water off around October 15, you lose the chance to test the system under pressure. We book blowouts ahead of that date, so leaks get found while there is still water in the line to show them.

The J&H approach

How we handle sprinklers in American Fork

1 How we handle it

Spring startup the right way

After the water comes on in April, we open the main slowly, run each zone, fix broken heads and leaks, check the filter and set the controller for your watering days instead of every day.

2 How we handle it

Coverage and run times

We check that heads reach each other, match nozzles in each zone and set cycle and soak on silt. On sloped spots we add check valves so the low heads do not drain the line and flood the bottom of the yard.

3 How we handle it

Fall blowout before shutoff

We schedule blowouts in early to mid October, test each zone one last time and then clear the lines with air. Backflow parts and valves get drained so a hard freeze does not crack them over the winter.

American Fork questions

Sprinkler Repair in American Fork: what people ask

When does pressurized irrigation turn on in American Fork?
The city runs it from about April 15 to October 15, and the dates can shift when they land on a weekend. In dry years the city has asked people to hold off on starting. We check the current guidance each spring before we book startups.
What are the watering days in American Fork?
The current schedule puts even addresses on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday and odd addresses on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Saturday is spot watering only, and the late-night hours are set aside for the system to recharge. The city adjusts the days in dry years.
Do I need a filter on my sprinklers?
The city screens its pressurized water but does not treat it, and it recommends a filter at your home to protect the heads. A filter that gets cleaned keeps grit out of nozzles and drip lines. We install them and show you how to clean yours.
Can I get a rebate on a smart controller?
Utah Water Savers runs a smart controller rebate open to homes across Utah. Terms change, so check the program before you buy. We install the controller and program each zone around your American Fork watering days.
