Topsoil and Materials in Saratoga Springs

Dirt and rock for a Saratoga Springs lot

Most Saratoga Springs homes are new, and most new lots get handed over as raw dirt. What is left on top after the basement dig is rarely good growing soil. Sod rolled straight onto it roots shallow and browns fast once the July heat sets in. On a metered irrigation line, you also pay for every extra minute you run the timer trying to save it. A few inches of good topsoil fixes that at the start.

We sell five things: topsoil, screened topsoil, landscape rock, fill dirt and road base. Call or text us to order. You can pick up at our Provo yard, or we drop it off at your place in Saratoga Springs, and we bill you at the location. Tell us how big the area is and what goes on top, and we will help you work out the amount, so you are not paying for a second trip.

Each one has a job on a Saratoga lot. Fill dirt builds up low spots so the yard can hold the 5 percent fall away from the house that the city asks for. Road base goes under patios, walks and pads. Screened topsoil goes where lawn and plants will grow. Landscape rock covers beds, just not the whole front yard, since city code wants at least a quarter of it planted.

Saratoga Springs went from about 1,000 people in 2000 to an estimated 61,000 in 2025, so most yards here started as bare dirt on a city deadline, watered by a metered pressurized line that charges more once you pass your lot's allotment.

The Saratoga Springs challenges

Material mistakes on Saratoga Springs lots

Sod on raw builder dirt

Packed builder dirt sheds water and stops roots. New sod on top of it looks fine for a few weeks, then dries out at the edges and seams. You turn up the timer, the meter climbs toward your allotment and the lawn still struggles all summer long.

Gravel in the park strip

The city's park strip rules allow rock and cobble but ban gravel. If you use rock, at least 30 percent of the strip still has to be plants. Order the right rock for that strip instead of spreading leftover gravel from another job and hoping nobody notices.

Fill where topsoil belongs

Fill dirt is for building up grade, not for growing grass. It works great under the surface, but a lawn or a bed needs real topsoil on top of it. Mixing the two up is how a yard ends up with a bare patch that never fills in, no matter how much you water.

Thin base under hardscape

Road base under a patio or a pad has to go in deep enough and get packed in lifts. On lower lots near the lake, the ground below can stay wetter, and a thin base goes soft. Order enough base for the full depth, not the bare minimum.

The J&H approach

How ordering works in Saratoga Springs

1 How we handle it

Call or text with your area

Send us the size of the area and what it is for. A lawn, a flower bed, a patio base and a low spot each need a different material and depth. We help you figure the amount so you order once and do not end up short on a Saturday.

2 How we handle it

Pick up or drop off

Pick up at our Provo yard if you have a truck or a trailer. Or we drop it off in Saratoga Springs right where you want it, on the driveway or a spot you mark. Tell us about curbs, new sidewalk and tight streets so the load lands in the right place.

3 How we handle it

Matched to the job

Screened topsoil for sod and beds, fill dirt for grade, road base under hardscape and landscape rock for cover. If you are not sure which one fits your project, ask before you order. We would rather sell you the right load than a second one.

"Jackson and his crew did a phenomenal job on our back yard. I had a vision and they brought it to life. We had them do a retaining wall, grading, underground trampoline, sprinkler system, and sod. They met deadlines, communication was on point, and the whole crew was friendly.…"

Saratoga Springs questions

Topsoil and Materials in Saratoga Springs: what people ask

What do you sell for Saratoga Springs yards?
We sell topsoil, screened topsoil, landscape rock, fill dirt and road base. Call or text us to place an order. You can pick it up at our Provo yard, or we drop it off at your Saratoga Springs address, and we bill you at the location.
Is screened topsoil worth it for a new lawn?
For a lawn, yes. Screened topsoil has the rocks and clods taken out, so it spreads smooth and sod lies flat. Regular topsoil is fine for filling beds or rough areas. On a bare new-build lot in Saratoga Springs, the lawn area is where screening pays for itself.
How much topsoil do I need?
It depends on the area and the depth. Measure the length times the width in feet, multiply by the depth in feet and divide by 27 to get cubic yards. Or just send us the size and what it is for, and we will help you work it out.
Can I use landscape rock in my front yard?
Yes, for part of it. Saratoga Springs wants at least 25 percent of front yard landscaping planted rather than covered in rock or hardscape, and rock can cover beds in the rest. In the park strip, rock is allowed but at least 30 percent of that strip has to be plants.

Your dream yard. Done right. Done on time.
