Landscape Design in Provo

A Provo yard plan built by the people who draw it

Most Provo yards we redo were never designed. They grew one project at a time: a patio one summer, a shed the next, sprinklers patched around both. The result is a yard where water runs toward the house, the lawn has dry arcs all over it, and nothing quite connects. One plan for the whole yard fixes that, because every piece gets placed with the others in mind, including the parts you cannot see.

A plan in Provo has to start with the ground. A Riverbottoms lot near the Provo River is flat, heavy clay with water close to the surface. An Edgemont lot is gravel and slope. The plant list, the drainage and even where the patio sits change with that. So does the water. The secondary system shuts off around mid-October and comes back around mid-April, so anything planted late in the season needs a plan for water after the shutoff.

We have built more than 200 projects across Utah County, and the ones that hold up best were designed by the crew that built them. Jackson and the team draw your plan, price it in writing, and then build it ourselves. There is no handoff between a designer who has never set a paver and an installer who never saw the drawings until the morning of the dig.

Provo runs from the Utah Lake flats up to the Rock Canyon bench, so one side of town is heavy clay and the other is gravel, and the yard has to be built for the ground it actually sits on.

The Provo challenges

What a Provo design has to solve

Two kinds of ground in one town

Provo runs from the Utah Lake flats up to the Rock Canyon bench, with heavy alkaline clay down low and gravel and rock up high. A design that works great on one can fail on the other. We plan the soil prep, plant choices and drainage for the ground your house actually sits on.

A frost that can run into May

Provo sits in zone 6b to 7a, and the last spring frost can run into the second week of May. Designs heavy on tender plants or warm-climate picks look great on paper and die in the first cold snap of May. We plant for this valley, not for a catalog shot in California.

Water on the provider's calendar

Most Provo yards water off secondary, which runs roughly mid-April to mid-October on dates the provider sets. A good design groups plants by how much water they need, so each zone runs as long as it should and no longer. That matters more as every secondary connection in Utah gets metered by 2030.

Alkaline soil and the wrong plants

Provo's soil runs a pH around 7.5 to 8.2. Plants that want acid soil yellow out here no matter how much you feed them. Gambel oak, Utah serviceberry, Apache plume and Rocky Mountain penstemon do well because they grew up in this ground.

The J&H approach

How a J&H design comes together

1 How we handle it

Walk the yard together

Jackson comes out, walks the lot with you, and asks how you want to use it. Kids, dogs, big family dinners, a court, a quiet corner. We check the slope, the soil, where water goes now, and where the sun sits on a summer evening.

2 How we handle it

One plan, one written price

You get a full-yard plan with hardscape, grading, walls, planting, lighting and sprinklers laid out together. We price it in writing, and we can phase it so you build part this year and the rest later without redoing anything.

3 How we handle it

Built by the same crew

The team that drew the plan builds it, so questions on site get answered on site. If a buried boulder or an old utility line changes something once we dig, we adjust the plan and tell you before the work moves forward.

Provo questions

Landscape Design in Provo: what people ask

Why pay for a design instead of just building?
Because the expensive mistakes in Provo yards are the ones you cannot see later. A patio graded toward the house. Sprinkler zones that mix lawn and shrubs. A wall placed right where a drain should have gone. A plan catches those before money goes into the ground, which is a lot cheaper than catching them after.
Can you design around my existing trees and patio?
Yes. Older Provo yards often have big trees worth keeping and hardscape that is still solid. We work around what is good and replace what is not. Big trees get their root zones protected during grading so the shade you have now is still there in five years.
Do you use drought-tolerant plants?
We use plants that fit Provo, and many of them are water-wise natives that handle alkaline clay and dry summers. That does not mean gravel everywhere. A good design keeps lawn where you actually use it and puts beds that need far less water everywhere else.
Can I build the design in phases?
Yes. A lot of Provo homeowners do grading, drainage and sprinkler mainlines first, then patios and planting the next season. Building in that order means nothing gets torn up twice, and the plan keeps each phase lined up with the next.

Your dream yard. Done right. Done on time.
