Artificial Turf in Eagle Mountain

Artificial turf on Eagle Mountain lots

On metered city water, a lawn costs you every week of the summer. That is why so many Eagle Mountain homeowners ask us about artificial turf. It stays green without the sprinklers, it handles kids and dogs, and it does not care about the cold nights near City Center. It is not maintenance-free, though, and it only looks good for years if what is under it is built right.

The rules are worth checking first. The city has been working on artificial turf standards, and many HOAs have their own rules on where turf can go and what it has to look like. So before we order a single roll, we confirm the current rules with the city and your HOA, including where turf is allowed on your lot and how much of the yard it can cover.

Base prep is the real job. Builder dirt here is packed and uneven, and turf laid on it shows every bump. We dig out, lay and compact a crushed rock base, grade it to drain and pin the edges. Wind is the other test. Valley gusts will find any loose seam or edge, and blowing dust and tumbleweeds land on turf like anywhere else, so we plan for easy cleanup.

Eagle Mountain is two climates in one city, the milder Ranches by the Lake Mountains and the colder City Center out toward Fairfield, with open Cedar Valley wind, metered city water and a one-year clock on new front yards.

Know your Eagle Mountain ground

Elevation
About 4,885 feet
Ground
Alkaline, well-drained native ground that builders often leave stripped and packed hard, running saltier toward City Center
Secondary irrigation
there is no citywide secondary system, so yards run on metered city water, and lawns may not be watered from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Growing season
USDA zone 6a to 7a, with cold pockets that act colder, last frost around May 15 on the Ranches side and as late as June 7 near City Center
Wall permits
In Eagle Mountain a retaining wall over 4 feet tall, counting the 30-inch footing depth, needs a building permit and engineered drawings, and no wall may rise more than 6 feet above finished grade

The Eagle Mountain challenges

Turf problems we see in Eagle Mountain

Seams and edges lifting in wind

Turf held down with a few staples and rushed seams will lift when a strong gust gets under an edge. Once air gets under it, the lift spreads. We nail edges on a tight pattern, use seam tape and adhesive rated for cold, and tuck edges against a solid border.

Dust and tumbleweeds on the blades

Open lots at the edge of town send dust and tumbleweeds across yards every spring. They settle into turf and make it look dull and flat. A leaf blower and a stiff rake fix it, so we leave you with a simple cleanup routine.

Hot turf in full sun

Synthetic turf gets much hotter than real grass in direct summer sun. For play areas and dog runs we suggest a cooler infill, some shade from a pergola or tree and a quick rinse before kids play on the hottest afternoons.

Pet areas that smell

Dog urine needs a path down and out. Turf on a packed base with no drainage holds odor, especially in summer. For pet runs we use a fully draining turf backing, a base that lets water through and an infill made to cut odor.

The J&H approach

How we install turf here

1 How we handle it

Confirm the rules first

We check your HOA rules and the city's current turf standards before we design anything. Where turf can go and how much of the yard it covers can depend on both, and we would rather know before you pay a deposit.

2 How we handle it

Build a base that drains

We dig out the top few inches, lay and compact crushed rock and shape it so water runs off or through. On a slope we key the base into the hill and anchor the turf more often so it does not creep downhill.

3 How we handle it

Fit it to how you use it

Putting greens get short, dense turf on a base rolled smooth. Pet areas get drainage and odor control. Turf around a sport court gets tougher blades that hold up to foot traffic. We bring samples so you can see them in your own yard.

Eagle Mountain questions

Artificial Turf in Eagle Mountain: what people ask

Is artificial turf allowed in Eagle Mountain?
Ask first. The city has been working on artificial turf standards, and many HOAs have their own rules too. Before we design, we confirm the current rules with the city and your HOA, so you know where turf can go and how much you can install.
Will turf blow up in the wind?
Not if it is installed right. The risk comes from loose edges and weak seams. We nail edges close together, glue and tape the seams, and border the turf against a curb or paver edge so the wind has nothing to grab.
Does turf save water in Eagle Mountain?
It cuts the water a lawn would use, which matters on metered city water with tiered rates. You will still rinse it now and then, especially pet areas. Lawn replacement incentives have been offered through regional programs, but Eagle Mountain's eligibility has been unclear, so check before you count on one.
Can you put turf on a slope?
Yes, with extra work. On a slope we key the base in, add more anchors and sometimes add a step or a short wall so it is not too steep to walk on. Real grass on steep ground is hard to water evenly, so turf or rock often makes more sense there.

Your dream yard. Done right. Done on time.
