Artificial Turf in Salem

Artificial turf that drains in Salem

Turf in Salem lives or dies by drainage. Rain, snowmelt and pet urine pass right through it, and then the ground underneath has to carry that water away. Salem sits on Lake Bonneville clay that holds water, and near Salem Pond and the spring-fed low spots, groundwater can sit shallow. Turf laid over that without a real base turns into a damp, smelly mat within a season or two.

Water use is one reason people look at turf in the first place. Salem's pressurized irrigation has been metered since 2023, and a thirsty lawn shows up on it. Turf needs no sprinklers, so swapping a hard-to-water strip or a shady patch of struggling grass can make sense. Trees and beds nearby still need their own water, which means the sprinkler system needs some rework as part of the job.

We install turf for lawn swaps, side yards, dog runs, play areas, putting greens and the borders around backyard courts. Rules on turf can come from the city or your HOA, and they change, so we confirm the current rules with Salem City and your HOA before you choose a product or tear out any grass. That one phone call can save you a costly redo.

Salem grew up around a spring-fed pond, and it shows: parts of town sit over shallow groundwater, so drainage and hardscape footings near the low areas need a real plan, not a guess.

The Salem challenges

What turf runs into in Salem

Wet ground near the pond

Near the pond and over spring flow, a base dug into wet ground stays wet. Turf on top of it feels spongy, sinks in spots and can pick up a sour smell. Those areas need a deeper base of clean rock and a drain to carry water out, or a raised grade that keeps the base above the wet ground.

Clay that heaves in winter

Clay that holds water also freezes and thaws with it. Salem's last frost can run into mid-to-late May, so the base under turf goes through a long season of that movement. A thin base lets the turf ripple and the seams pull apart. A thick, compacted base keeps it lying flat.

Pets and infill

Dog urine soaks into the infill and the base below it. On clay it does not drain away fast, so the smell builds in hot weather. Pet areas need an open base that drains, an infill made for pets, and a quick rinse with the hose now and then to keep things fresh.

Heat and slope on the bench

Turf in full summer sun gets hot under bare feet. Up on the Salem Hills bench, lots also slope, and turf on a slope needs a firm base and tight edges so it does not creep and the infill does not wash downhill. Shade and a flat terrace for the play area help with both.

The J&H approach

How we install turf in Salem

1 How we handle it

Drainage first

We dig out the sod and soft soil, check for wet ground, and plan where the water will go. Wet areas get a deeper base, clean rock and a drain line. Then the base gets compacted in layers until it is firm and smooth.

2 How we handle it

Turf picked for pets, putts or curb

We match the turf and infill to how you use the space. Pet runs get pet-ready infill and a base that flushes well. A putting green needs a short, tight surface on a very smooth base, while a front lawn swap usually looks best with a softer, longer blade.

3 How we handle it

Sprinklers reworked around it

We cap the heads under the new turf, move water to the trees and beds that still need it, and put those zones on drip. That keeps water off the turf and keeps the meter from counting water nothing needs.

Salem questions

Artificial Turf in Salem: what people ask

Can turf go in over a wet area in Salem?
Sometimes. A spot that is damp after storms can usually take turf over a deeper drain-rock base and a drain line. A spot over steady spring flow is harder, and turf may not be the right answer there at all. We dig a test hole and tell you straight before you spend money.
Will turf work for my dogs?
Yes, with the right build. Dogs need a base that lets urine pass through and leave, an infill made for pets, and a rinse with the hose every so often. On Salem clay we lean toward a more open base, and sometimes we add a drain under the pet area.
Does Salem or my HOA have rules about turf?
They can, and the details change. We do not guess on rules. Before you order anything, we confirm the current rules with Salem City and your HOA, including anything that covers front yards and park strips.
How does turf compare to a lawn on metered water?
Turf needs no regular watering, so that area comes off the meter. It does cost more up front than sod, it gets hot in full sun, and it needs a rinse and a brushing now and then. For shady strips, dog runs and tough corners, the trade is often worth it.
