When a Pleasant Grove yard has sinking patios, leaning walls and water running at the house, we take it back to dirt, fix the grade and drainage, and rebuild it right.

Backyard Rebuild in Pleasant Grove

Fix the dirt, then rebuild the yard

Some Pleasant Grove yards cannot be patched. The patio has sunk into the clay, the wall along the back is leaning, the lawn is patchy and soft in the low corner, and the window wells fill up every spring. Fixing one thing at a time just moves the problem around. A rebuild takes the whole yard back to dirt so we can fix what caused it.

Most of what fails here fails for one of two reasons. On the valley floor, the base under the hardscape was too thin for fine Lake Bonneville clay, and the grade sends water toward the house. On the bench below Grove Creek and Battle Creek, walls went up without drains, and runoff from the hill has nowhere to go. Both problems start below the surface.

So we strip it. Old sod, failing pavers, dead shrubs, leaning block and broken sprinkler pipe all come out. Then we regrade, add drainage, rebuild walls with proper backfill, and lay a new base sized for your soil. Only after that do the new patio, sprinklers, lawn and beds go in, and you end up with a yard that behaves like a new one.

Pleasant Grove's bench lots sit on the alluvial fans below Grove Creek and Battle Creek, the exact ground built by debris coming out of the canyons, so how a yard grades and drains is the whole game.

Growing season
USDA zone 7a, last frost late April
Wall permits
In Pleasant Grove a retaining wall over 4 feet needs a permit, and a hillside lot with average slope over 15 percent triggers sensitive-lands review and a land disturbance permit

The Pleasant Grove challenges

Why Pleasant Grove yards fail

Water headed for the basement

A yard graded wrong sends rain and snowmelt toward the foundation. On Pleasant Grove clay that water sits against the wall instead of soaking away. We reset the grade so the ground falls away from the house, and add drains where the lot cannot shed water by itself.

Walls with no drainage

A lot of older block and timber walls on bench lots were stacked with clay behind them and no drain. Water builds up, freezes and pushes. Once a wall leans, it does not lean back. We pull it, dig out the wet fill, and rebuild with drain rock, fabric and pipe.

Old sprinklers under everything

Patched systems in older yards are a mess of mixed heads and tired pipe. When the yard is stripped, that is the cheapest moment to replace them. We lay out new zones that fit your watering days and the city's 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. rule.

Hauling it all away

Tearing out a yard makes a lot of debris: sod, concrete, block, roots and rock. On a tight Pleasant Grove lot, all of it may have to leave through one gate. We plan the haul-off, protect the driveway and the neighbors, and keep the street clean.

The J&H approach

How a rebuild comes together

1 How we handle it

Find the cause before tear-out

We walk the yard, watch where water goes, check the walls and dig a few holes. You get a short list of what failed and why, so the rebuild fixes the cause and not only what you can see.

2 How we handle it

Strip, grade and drain

Everything that failed comes out down to clean dirt. Then we set a new grade, install drains and swales, and rebuild any walls with real backfill. This is the step most failing yards skipped the first time around.

3 How we handle it

Build back in order

Base and hardscape go in first, with lighting wire and gas lines laid alongside. Then the new sprinkler system, then topsoil, sod and planting. Each step sits on a finished step below it, so nothing gets undone later.

Pleasant Grove questions

Backyard Rebuild in Pleasant Grove: what people ask

Is a rebuild better than fixing pieces?
If more than one or two things are failing, usually yes. Most failures in Pleasant Grove yards trace back to grade and drainage, which touch everything. Patching a patio while water still runs under it means paying twice. If a repair is enough, we will say so.
Can you save any of my existing yard?
Often we keep mature trees, good fencing and sometimes a solid patio. We check each piece. If it is sound and fits the new grade, it stays. If it is part of the problem, we show you why it has to go.
Will a rebuild stop water in my window wells?
In most cases a correct grade and drainage fix it. We slope the ground away from the house, extend downspouts, and add drains where the lot is flat or tight. If the water is coming up from groundwater instead, we will tell you and point you to the right fix.
