Landscape Design in Springville

A Springville yard plan starts with your elevation

There is no single Springville yard. A lot near the west fields sits close to 4,400 feet on heavy lakebed clay. A view lot up Canyon Road sits more than 1,000 feet higher on cobble fan soil. Hobble Creek runs between them with its own wet ground. Frost dates, drainage, plant choices and even the deer change across town, and a plan has to start from where your lot really is.

Water shapes the plan too. Springville's city pressurized irrigation runs about April 15 to October 15, at high pressure and with water that is dirtier than culinary. Every design we draw includes a filter and usually a pressure reducer, so the drip and the heads last. We size zones for lawn, beds and trees separately, because bench cobble and west-side clay hold water so differently.

One plan covers the whole yard, and the same J&H team builds it. That keeps grading, walls, patios, sprinklers, lighting and planting working together instead of fighting each other. With 200+ J&H projects done across Utah County, Jackson knows where plans go wrong and stays with your Springville yard from the first walk-through to the last tree. If the budget says two phases, the plan shows what goes first.

Springville, Art City, spreads from about 4,400 feet by Utah Lake up past 5,600 feet on the east bench, so a west-side clay yard and a bench view-lot are different soil, drainage and frost worlds, and one quote does not fit both.

Know your Springville ground

Elevation
About 4,551 feet
Ground
Heavy Lake Bonneville lakebed clay on the valley floor, gravelly cobble-filled fan soil up on the east bench, and Hobble Creek bottoms with a high water table
Secondary irrigation
Springville runs its own city pressurized irrigation, on around April 15 and off around October 15, and the high line pressure means most systems need a filter and a pressure reducer
Growing season
USDA zone 6b to 7a, last frost early-to-mid May on the bench
Wall permits
In Springville a retaining wall over 4 feet, footing included, needs a permit and engineering, and east-bench lots can fall in the Hillside Overlay with added grading rules

The Springville challenges

Where Springville yard plans fall apart

One plan for two grounds

Design ideas that work in the west fields fail on the bench, and the other way around. Plants that like moisture rot in fast-draining cobble, and plants that love good drainage drown in wet clay. Drainage is a lawn problem on one side of town and a slope problem on the other.

Deer on the bench, later frost

Above the valley floor, deer come down in winter and eat what they like. Bench yards also frost later, into early-to-mid May near the canyon. A plant list built for a valley-floor yard ignores both and loses money every spring.

High-pressure secondary water

Springville's secondary water runs at higher pressure than culinary and carries grit. Designs that skip a filter and a pressure reducer get clogged emitters, misting heads and blown fittings. The city itself tells people without a reducer to shorten their run times.

Permits hiding in the plan

Walls over 4 feet with the footing, new fences, and grading on Hillside Overlay lots all have city rules. A plan drawn without them can look great and then stall at the permit desk. Those rules need to be part of the design from day one.

The J&H approach

How we design Springville yards

1 How we handle it

Start from your lot's elevation

We note where your lot sits, its soil and slope, and how it drains today. Then we pick plants that fit that spot: deer-resistant and late-frost tough up high, clay-tolerant in well-drained raised beds down low.

2 How we handle it

Design the water system in

Our plans show the filter, pressure reducer, zones and drip runs, set for the city season. We place heads and drip so lawn, beds and trees each get what they need, with no spray landing on the patio or the house.

3 How we handle it

Plan around city rules early

If your yard needs a tall wall, a new fence or grading on a hillside lot, we check with Springville Community Development while we design. The plan you sign off on is built to get through the city, not to be redrawn later.

Springville questions

Landscape Design in Springville: what people ask

Do you design for east-bench lots?
Yes, and bench lots get their own approach. We plan terraces where the slope needs them, plant for deer and later frosts, and catch slope runoff before it reaches the house. Many bench lots also fall in the Hillside Overlay, so we check those rules as we design.
What does a full design plan show?
Grading and drainage, patios and walls, sprinklers with a filter and pressure reducer, lighting, and planting, all drawn for your Springville lot. It also shows the order to build in, so a later phase never has to rip up an earlier one.
Can you work with my existing trees and patio?
Yes. We map what is worth keeping, like a big shade tree or a solid patio, and design around it. If something is failing, we will tell you why, and show you what the plan does about it instead of just covering it up.
