Topsoil and Materials in Pleasant Grove

The right dirt for a Pleasant Grove yard

Most Pleasant Grove yards do not need more dirt. They need better dirt. On the valley floor, the native ground is fine Lake Bonneville silt and clay, and dumping clay-heavy fill on top makes a lawn that puddles and roots that stay shallow. On the bench below Grove Creek and Battle Creek, the native ground is rocky canyon-fan soil that drains fast and holds little water. Each one needs a different fix.

We bring screened topsoil, with compost mixed in where plants need it, and spread it to a depth that actually helps. Then we blend it into the top of the native soil, so roots do not hit a hard line where the two layers meet. For walls and pads we bring proper fill and road base, never leftover clay, because whatever sits under a patio has to compact and drain.

Rock and mulch are part of it too. On a sloped bench bed, bark can float and wash down in a hard storm, so we often use rock there and save mulch for flatter beds near the house. We handle delivery, spread it with the right machine, and keep the trucks off your driveway edges and sprinkler lines. If a load is short or wrong, we fix it, not you.

Pleasant Grove's bench lots sit on the alluvial fans below Grove Creek and Battle Creek, the exact ground built by debris coming out of the canyons, so how a yard grades and drains is the whole game.

The Pleasant Grove challenges

Soil problems we fix in Pleasant Grove

Clay on top of clay

Builders often spread whatever came out of the basement dig back across the yard. On the valley floor, that is dense lakebed clay. Sod laid on it struggles and puddles. We loosen the surface first, then spread and blend screened topsoil so water and roots can move down.

Thin, rocky soil on the bench

On Timpanogos bench lots the native ground is full of cobbles and drains quickly, so plants dry out between watering days. Topsoil with compost holds more water near the roots. We rake out the bigger rock first, so the new layer is not sitting on a bed of stones.

Mulch that washes downhill

Light bark on a steep bed below Battle Creek can end up in your driveway after one big storm. On slopes we use angular rock that locks together, or a heavier shredded mulch held by edging, and keep the light bark for flat beds.

Getting trucks onto the lot

Some bench lots have steep driveways or tight side yards, and a loaded dump truck is heavy. We plan where each load lands, protect curbs and sprinkler lines, and use smaller machines to carry material back where a truck cannot go.

The J&H approach

How we deliver and spread material

1 How we handle it

Check the ground first

We dig a few spots to see if you are on clay, cobble or builder fill. That tells us how much topsoil you need and whether it needs compost blended in. You do not pay for depth your yard does not need.

2 How we handle it

The right material for each spot

Screened topsoil for lawn and beds. Road base and fill that compact for patios, walls and pads. Rock for slopes and drainage, mulch for flat beds. Each one is ordered for its spot instead of one big load of everything.

3 How we handle it

Spread, blend and grade

We spread with the right machine, work the new layer into the old, and grade so water moves away from your house. When we leave, the yard is ready for sod, seed or planting, with the extra hauled off.

Pleasant Grove questions

Topsoil and Materials in Pleasant Grove: what people ask

How much topsoil do I need over clay in Pleasant Grove?
It depends on what is going to grow there. Lawns and beds both do better with several inches of good soil blended into loosened clay than with a thin skim on top. We measure your yard and give you the cubic yards and the cost in writing.
Is road base the same as fill?
No. Road base is crushed rock with fines that packs hard, and it goes under patios, pads and walkways. Fill raises or shapes the grade. On Pleasant Grove clay, we never use clay as fill under hardscape, because it holds water and moves.
Rock or mulch for my beds?
On flat beds, mulch holds moisture and feeds the soil as it breaks down. On bench slopes, rock stays put better in a storm. Plenty of Pleasant Grove yards end up with both, mulch near the house and rock on the hill. We will show you samples and the price of each.

Your dream yard. Done right. Done on time.
