Landscaping in Provo

A Provo yard is not a generic yard

Provo sits on the old bottom of Lake Bonneville at about 4,550 feet, under the Wasatch and along the Provo River. That means heavy clay on the valley floor, rockier and steeper lots up on the Edgemont and Rock Canyon bench, and a secondary irrigation system that runs on the city's schedule, not yours. A crew that does not work here every week gets caught out by all three.

We build for that ground on purpose. The base under a patio is prepped so the clay does not heave it. The sprinkler design assumes secondary water that shuts off in the fall. The planting waits out a frost that can run to the second week of May. It is the difference between a yard that still looks right in three years and one that starts settling the first winter.

What Provo yards deal with

The local problems, and how we handle them

The clay under everything

Provo's silty Lake Bonneville clay drains slowly and moves when it gets wet, which is why so many patios and walls in town settle or heave. We prep and compact the sub-base for the clay before anything goes on top, so the hardscape stays flat.

The secondary water trap

Most Provo yards run on secondary (pressurized) irrigation that the provider turns on around mid-April and shuts off around mid-October. We design and set your system for that schedule, so the controller is not running dry lines in the shoulder season.

Bench lots and retaining walls

Up on the east bench, lots slope. In Provo a retaining wall over four feet tall, including its footing, needs a permit and engineered plans. We build the wall right, with drainage behind it, and keep it on the correct side of the code.

Wall heights and permit rules come from Provo City Development Services. We confirm current requirements with the city on every job, because code changes and yours is the property on the line.

Planting that lasts here

Built for zone 6b, not a catalog

Provo runs USDA hardiness zone 6b to 7a with alkaline soil, so the plants that thrive are not always the ones on the rack at a big-box store. We lean on things that are actually adapted to this valley, like Gambel oak, Utah serviceberry and Rocky Mountain penstemon, and we amend the clay with compost instead of tilling it, because tilled Wasatch clay just heals back into a brick.

On the lawn side, the clay wants a cycle-and-soak schedule, short bursts with time to soak in, or the water sheets off and pools. We set that up so your new sod actually takes.

Neighborhoods we work

All over Provo

We build in Grandview, Edgemont, Rock Canyon, Slate Canyon, Provost, Franklin, Sunset, the Provo River bottoms, Carterville and Sherwood Hills, from flat riverside lots to steep bench yards.

Whether you are redoing a tired yard near downtown or starting from dirt on a new bench build, the first step is the same: we come look at your ground and give you an honest number in writing.

"Jackson and his crew did a phenomenal job on our back yard. I had a vision and they brought it to life. We had them do a retaining wall, grading, underground trampoline, sprinkler system, and sod. They met deadlines, communication was on point, and the whole crew was friendly.…"

Provo questions

What Provo homeowners ask us

Do I need a permit for a retaining wall in Provo?
In Provo, a retaining wall under four feet tall, including its footing, does not need a building permit, but it still has to meet zoning setbacks. Over four feet, you need a building permit with a site plan and engineered plans. We handle the wall to code and confirm the current rules with Provo City Development Services on every job.
When does secondary water turn on and off in Provo?
Secondary (pressurized) irrigation in the area is usually turned on around mid-April and shut off around mid-October, on dates the provider sets each year. We set your sprinkler system up for that schedule so it is not trying to run dry lines when the water is off.
When is the best time to plant in Provo?
Provo runs hardiness zone 6b to 7a and the last spring frost can run into the second week of May, so tender plants go in after that. Sod, trees and hardscape can go in across most of the season. The best time to start is before the schedule fills up, so send us the project.
Why do so many Provo patios and walls settle?
The valley floor is heavy Lake Bonneville clay that moves when it gets wet. If the sub-base is not prepped and compacted for that clay, the hardscape settles or heaves. We prep the base for the ground it is going on, which is the part you cannot see and the part that lasts.
