Topsoil and Materials in Cedar Hills

Dirt and rock for a bench lot

Cedar Hills sits on an alluvial fan, the old shoreline bench of Lake Bonneville. Before the homes came, a lot of it was dry farm and sagebrush. What is under your yard now depends on the lot and on what the builder left behind, and no single source pins down the soil for the whole city. So we start with a look at your ground, then help you pick the right material.

We sell five things: topsoil, screened topsoil, landscape rock, fill dirt and road base. Screened topsoil goes under new sod and in planting beds. Fill dirt raises low spots and builds up grade. Road base goes under patios, walks and court slabs. Landscape rock covers beds and banks, which matters here, because city code counts rock, boulders and localscapes as landscaping.

Ordering is simple. Call or text us with what you need and roughly how much. You can pick it up at our Provo yard or have it dropped off at your Cedar Hills home, and it is billed at the location. If you are not sure how many yards to order, send us the size of the area and we will help you work it out.

Cedar Hills calls itself Utah's mile-high city, a family town on the bench at the mouth of American Fork Canyon where even a short retaining wall needs a permit, the secondary water is metered, and hillside lots in The Cedars and Canyon Heights follow their own grading rules.

The Cedar Hills challenges

Material mistakes on Cedar Hills lots

Sod on leftover builder dirt

Builders often spread whatever came out of the basement dig across the yard. Sod laid on that roots shallow and browns in the first hot stretch. On a metered secondary bill, you pay for every extra cycle it takes to keep it alive. A layer of screened topsoil fixes most of it.

Fill with big rock in it

Cheap fill can carry rock, roots and junk. City design standards do not allow rocks over 6 inches in fill, and big rock leaves voids that settle under a patio or court. Even good fill dirt still needs to go down in compacted layers.

Too little base under hardscape

Road base is what keeps a patio or court flat through the freeze and thaw up here. Order too little and it gets spread thin to make it reach. We help you figure the depth and square footage so the base under your project is the right thickness everywhere.

Rock that slides off banks

Round rock looks good in a flat bed and rolls right down a slope. On bench lots with banks, angular landscape rock locks together and stays where you put it. If you are covering a slope, tell us when you order and we will point you to the right one.

The J&H approach

How ordering works

1 How we handle it

Call or text your order

Tell us the material, how much and where it is going. A photo of the spot helps. If you only know the length and width of the area, we can work out the cubic yards for you.

2 How we handle it

Pick up or drop off

Pick up at our Provo yard if you have a truck or trailer, or we drop it at your Cedar Hills address. For a drop, tell us where the pile should go, so it lands on the driveway and not on the new sod.

3 How we handle it

Matched to your job

Screened topsoil for lawns and beds, fill dirt for grade, road base for anything with a slab or pavers on top, landscape rock for cover. If we are building a full project for you, we figure the materials into the plan.

Cedar Hills questions

Topsoil and Materials in Cedar Hills: what people ask

Do you deliver topsoil to Cedar Hills?
Yes. Call or text to order, and we drop it off at your Cedar Hills home. You can also pick it up at our Provo yard. Orders are billed at the location. Let us know if the drop spot is on a slope or a tight driveway.
What is the difference between topsoil and screened topsoil?
Screened topsoil has been run through a screen to pull out rocks, roots and clumps. It spreads smoother and is the better pick under new sod or in beds. Regular topsoil costs less and works fine for filling and rough grading where nothing fine goes on top.
What goes under a patio, fill dirt or road base?
Road base. Fill dirt builds up the grade, but it is not a base for hardscape. Road base packs tight and drains, so it carries pavers, concrete and court slabs through freeze and thaw. Fill can go below it if the grade needs raising, compacted in layers first.

Your dream yard. Done right. Done on time.
