Artificial Turf in Lehi

Turf that stays flat in Lehi

Turf looks easy. Roll it out, trim the edges and you are done. In real life, turf is only as good as the base under it, same as a patio. Down on the Lehi flats, that base sits on clay that barely lets water through. Without a real drain path, rain and pet urine sit in the base, the turf smells and the ground under it goes soft. On Traverse Mountain, water drains fine, but loose fill can settle and leave dips you can see from the street.

A lot of Lehi homeowners look at turf because of water. Secondary water here is metered now, and a lawn on a hot, open lot can drink a lot of it. Turf can cut that use way down in the spots where grass struggles most, like a narrow side yard or a steep strip by the driveway. It is not a fit for every part of the yard, though, and a good installer will tell you where it is not.

Then there is heat. Turf in full afternoon sun gets hot to bare feet in July, a lot hotter than real grass. We plan around that with where the turf goes, what infill we use and whether shade or a quick rinse is close by. Rules matter too. We confirm current Lehi city rules and your HOA's rules on turf before we order a single roll.

Lehi is two towns in one: bare new-build lots on clay down by Thanksgiving Point with an HOA clock ticking, and steep gravel benches up on Traverse Mountain that need engineered walls.

The Lehi challenges

Lehi turf problems to plan for

Flats clay that traps water below

Turf drains through small holes in its backing, so the base below has to carry the water away. On Lehi clay, that water cannot just soak down. Without a deeper rock base and a slope or drain to move it off, the base stays wet, the turf ripples and pet areas start to smell by midsummer.

Hot surfaces on open lots

Many Lehi yards still have young trees and very little shade. Turf in that full sun gets hot enough in summer that kids and dogs will not want to stay on it in the afternoon. A lighter infill, a shade sail or a hose bib close by all help, but where you put the turf helps most.

Slopes and settling fill

On Traverse Mountain lots, turf often goes on slopes or on pads built up with fill. On a slope, the base has to be locked in so it does not creep downhill. On fill, the ground has to be packed in layers first, or low spots show through the turf within a season or two.

Wind lifting loose edges

Lehi gets real wind off the Point of the Mountain. Turf edges that are not nailed tight and held by a solid border can lift and curl, and seams that were rushed can pull apart. Once wind gets under an edge, it keeps working at it all season.

The J&H approach

How we install turf in Lehi

1 How we handle it

A dug-out base with a way out for water

We remove the sod and soft soil, then put down a packed rock base sized for your ground. On clay we dig deeper and give the base a slope or a drain line so water leaves. On bench fill we pack each layer before the next one goes on.

2 How we handle it

Matching turf and infill to the job

Dog runs, play areas and putting greens each need a different turf and infill. For pets we use a base and infill that rinse clean. For greens we pick a short, tight turf that rolls true. We walk you through the trade-offs, heat included, before you choose.

3 How we handle it

Edges, seams and sprinklers handled

We nail seams and edges tight and set a border that holds them in Lehi wind. Sprinkler heads inside the turf area get capped or moved so they water the beds, not the turf. Around a sport court, we fit the turf edge to the slab so it sits flush.

Lehi questions

Artificial Turf in Lehi: what people ask

Is artificial turf allowed in my Lehi neighborhood?
That depends on current city rules and on your HOA, and either one can change. Many HOAs have their own turf rules on top of the city's. We confirm both for your lot before we price the job, so you are not stuck tearing turf out after it goes in.
Is turf a good idea if I have dogs?
It can be, as long as the base drains. Urine has to pass through the turf and leave the base fast, or it builds up and smells. On Lehi clay that means a deeper rock base and a way out for the water. A quick hose rinse on hot days keeps it fresh.
Can you put a putting green in my Lehi backyard?
Yes. A putting green needs a firmer, flatter base than a lawn area so the ball rolls true. We shape any breaks you want right into the base. A green fits well in the leftover space next to a court or a patio.
Will turf save water in Lehi?
Turf does not need regular watering, so it cuts outdoor water in the areas it covers. On a metered secondary system, that shows up on your bill. You may still want a little water nearby for rinsing pet areas or cooling the surface on the hottest days.
