Pickleball and Sports Courts in American Fork

A court has to stay flat for years

A sport court is usually the biggest single slab that goes into a backyard. It has to stay flat for years, or the ball starts taking odd hops and water sits in the low corner. In American Fork that is a real test, because much of the city sits on old lakebed silt and clay. The USGS says that ground settles under heavy loads and loses strength when it is wet.

So the work under the court matters more than the color on top. We dig out the soft soil, bring in road base, compact it in layers and set the slab with a slight slope so rain runs off one edge. On the east side, closer to the canyon mouth, we often dig into cobbles and boulders instead. That ground drains better but takes longer to clear. Either way, we see it before we price it.

Most court jobs here include more than the slab. Families add a fence to keep balls out of the neighbor's yard, lights for summer evenings, a putting green on the side or turf around the edges. American Fork wants a plan and a permit for any fence or wall over 48 inches, and most court fences run taller than that, so the permit is on our list from day one.

American Fork sits at the foot of Timpanogos where the river comes out of the canyon, so one town runs from soft lakebed silt that ponds and settles on the flats to boulder ground at the canyon mouth, all watered on the city's metered PI schedule.

Elevation
About 4,613 feet
Ground
Lake Bonneville silt and clay on the flat plain that settles and ponds, river gravel under it at depths that vary, and boulder-rich fan ground at the mountain front
Secondary irrigation
American Fork runs its own metered pressurized irrigation from April 15 to October 15, with even and odd watering days that the city adjusts in dry years
Growing season
USDA zone 6a to 7a, depending on the lot, last frost around late April
Wall permits
In American Fork any fence or wall over 48 inches needs a plan and a permit from the Building Division (City Code 17.5.115), and lots on the city's hazard map can need a soils report

The American Fork challenges

Court problems we plan for in American Fork

A big slab on soft ground

A court spreads a lot of weight over a big area. On wet lakebed silt, one corner can settle more than the rest, and a crack follows. We dig and compact a deeper base and cut control joints so any movement happens where we want it.

Fence height and permits

Court fences usually run well above 48 inches, and in American Fork any fence or wall over that height needs a plan and a permit. Building first and asking later can mean taking it down. We send the plan in before the posts go in.

Light spilling next door

Court lights that shine into a neighbor's bedroom cause trouble fast, and lots in the newer subdivisions sit close together. We pick fixtures that aim down at the court and place the poles so the light stays in your yard.

Where the runoff goes

A court sheds a lot of water in one direction. On a flat American Fork lot, that water needs a planned path, or it pools in the lawn or runs toward the house. We set the slab slope and the drain path at the same time.

The J&H approach

How we build courts in American Fork

1 How we handle it

Site and soil check

We pick the court spot by looking at sun, slope, neighbors and soil. A test hole shows if we are on silt, gravel or rock, and that sets how deep the base goes and what the slab costs.

2 How we handle it

Slab, then surface

We pour a reinforced slab with a slight cross slope, let it cure, then add a court coating or tile surface with the lines you want. Pickleball and half-court basketball can share one pad if you plan for it.

3 How we handle it

Fence, lights and turf to finish

We set fence posts in concrete, run power for lights in conduit and finish the edges with turf, rock or planting. A putting green can tie in beside the court so the whole corner feels like one space.

American Fork questions

Pickleball and Sports Courts in American Fork: what people ask

Will a pickleball court fit in my American Fork yard?
A single court needs a flat rectangle with room to run past the lines on every side. Older homes near the historic downtown often sit on roomy lots, and plenty of other yards have the space too. We measure your yard and show you where a court fits, and how big it can be, before you decide.
Do I need a permit for court fencing?
Most court fences are taller than 48 inches, and American Fork code says any fence or wall over that height needs a plan and a permit from the Building Division. We draw the plan, send it in and confirm current rules with the city and your HOA.
Can you add a putting green next to the court?
Yes. A putting green sits on a firm, compacted base shaped for the breaks you want. Next to a court it uses up the leftover strip and gives people something to do between games. We build both on one plan so the drainage works for each.

Your dream yard. Done right. Done on time.
