Topsoil and Materials in American Fork

Good dirt for American Fork yards

Much of American Fork sits on fine lakebed silt and clay left by Lake Bonneville. It packs hard, drains slowly and gets sticky when it is wet. On a new lot, builders often leave the subsoil from the basement dig on top. Grass and plants on that ground root shallow and dry out between watering days, and on a metered line you end up paying to water a lawn that still looks thirsty.

Good topsoil fixes most of that. We sell regular topsoil and screened topsoil, which has the rocks and clods taken out so it spreads smooth for sod or seed. We also carry landscape rock for beds, fill dirt for low spots and road base for patios, walks and pads. Near the canyon mouth, where the native ground is rocky, a layer of screened topsoil gives roots a place to live.

Ordering is simple. Call or text us with what you need and how much. You can pick it up at our Provo yard or have it dropped off at your American Fork home, and it is billed at the location. Not sure how much to get? Tell us the size of the area and how deep you want it, and we will help you work out the number.

American Fork sits at the foot of Timpanogos where the river comes out of the canyon, so one town runs from soft lakebed silt that ponds and settles on the flats to boulder ground at the canyon mouth, all watered on the city's metered PI schedule.

Know your American Fork ground

Elevation
About 4,613 feet
Ground
Lake Bonneville silt and clay on the flat plain that settles and ponds, river gravel under it at depths that vary, and boulder-rich fan ground at the mountain front
Secondary irrigation
American Fork runs its own metered pressurized irrigation from April 15 to October 15, with even and odd watering days that the city adjusts in dry years
Growing season
USDA zone 6a to 7a, depending on the lot, last frost around late April
Wall permits
In American Fork any fence or wall over 48 inches needs a plan and a permit from the Building Division (City Code 17.5.115), and lots on the city's hazard map can need a soils report

The American Fork challenges

Dirt problems on American Fork lots

Builder subsoil under the sod

On newer lots, the top layer is often packed subsoil, not topsoil. Sod laid on it roots an inch or two and browns in July. Loosening the ground and adding topsoil first gives the roots room to grab water on your watering days.

Silt that seals up

Lakebed silt and clay can seal at the surface, so water runs off before it soaks in. Spreading new topsoil over hard silt can trap water at the line between them. Loosen or till the old ground first so the two layers mix a bit.

Rocky ground near the canyon

On the east side, the native soil can be full of cobbles, and water drains through it fast. Screened topsoil spread deep enough over that rock helps beds and lawn hold water from one watering day to the next, instead of losing it to the gravel below.

Ordering the wrong amount

A short order means a second trip. A big over-order means a pile you have to move or get rid of. Measure the area, pick a depth, and we can help turn that into cubic yards before you place the order.

The J&H approach

How ordering works for American Fork

1 How we handle it

Call or text your order

Tell us the material, the amount and your American Fork address. We confirm the price and set a pickup or drop-off time that works for you, so you are not waiting around all day for a truck.

2 How we handle it

Pick up at the Provo yard

If you have a truck or trailer, swing by our Provo yard and pick up your order. Bring a tarp to cover the load for the drive home up I-15, since loose dirt and rock blow out at highway speed.

3 How we handle it

Drop-off at your house

For a drop-off, tell us where you want the pile. A tarp or plywood under it saves the driveway, and a spot close to where you are working saves you a lot of wheelbarrow trips across the yard.

American Fork questions

Topsoil and Materials in American Fork: what people ask

What is the difference between topsoil and screened topsoil?
Screened topsoil has gone through a screen that pulls out rocks, roots and clods. It spreads smooth and is the pick under sod, seed and planting beds. Regular topsoil works for filling and rough grading where a few rocks do not matter.
What goes under a patio or walkway?
Road base. It packs tight when you compact it in thin layers and makes a firm bed for pavers and concrete. On American Fork's softer lakebed silt, a deeper base helps the patio stay flat. Fill dirt is for raising low areas, not for under hardscape.
Can you drop off in American Fork?
Yes. Call or text with your order and address, and we will set a drop-off time. It is billed at the location. If you have a truck or trailer, you can also pick up at our Provo yard and skip the wait.
