Topsoil and Materials in Orem

Material that works with Orem clay

Orem's ground is heavy Lake Bonneville clay. It holds water a long time once it is wet, but it takes water in slowly, and it packs hard under foot traffic and equipment. The wrong topsoil makes all of that worse. Spread more heavy, unscreened dirt on top and you get a lawn that puddles in spring, cracks in August, and never quite fills in no matter what you feed it.

The right material does the opposite. Screened topsoil blended into the clay with compost lets roots get down where the moisture is. That matters in Orem more than most places, because the water you put on the lawn is metered culinary water on a tiered rate. Soil that holds water evenly means shorter sprinkler cycles and a smaller summer bill.

We deliver it and spread it. Topsoil, landscape rock, bark mulch, fill dirt and road base all get placed, graded and packed where needed. A lot of Orem homeowners are also trading strips of lawn for rock and mulch beds to cut water use, and we prep those beds so the rock does not sink into the clay by next spring and come up full of weeds.

Orem is the one town around here with no secondary water, so the sprinkler design shows up on your culinary bill in a way it does not for the neighbors.

The Orem challenges

Material mistakes we fix in Orem

Heavy fill sold as topsoil

Some cheap topsoil in the valley is just screened clay with a better name. Lay it over Orem clay and it seals the surface instead of loosening it. We check what is coming in and match it to the ground you already have.

Rock beds on bare clay

Rock spread straight on clay with no fabric or edging sinks, mixes with mud, and spills onto the lawn and sidewalk. Weeds push through within a season. We prep, lay fabric and edge every bed before the first load of rock goes down.

Thin soil over packed dirt

An inch of topsoil over compacted ground leaves roots stuck in a shallow layer that dries out fast. On culinary water that means watering more often just to keep it alive. Blending the new soil into the ground below fixes it, because roots follow the moisture down.

Road base that settles

Road base dumped in one thick layer under a patio or shed pad will not compact all the way through. The pad looks fine for a year, then settles. It has to go down in thin lifts, each one packed before the next.

The J&H approach

How we deliver and spread in Orem

1 How we handle it

Match the material to the job

Lawn areas get screened topsoil and compost. Water-wise beds get rock or bark over fabric. Patios and pads get road base. We work out the right mix and the right amount before anything is ordered, so you are not paying for extra.

2 How we handle it

Blend it in, do not just cover

We scarify the surface of the clay and work the new topsoil and compost into it instead of laying a separate layer on top. Roots cross into the native ground, and water soaks deeper before it runs off.

3 How we handle it

Spread to grade and edged

Everything gets graded away from the house. Beds get steel or paver edging so rock and mulch stay where they belong. Road base gets packed in lifts so it is ready for pavers or concrete.

Orem questions

Topsoil and Materials in Orem: what people ask

How much topsoil do I need for new sod in Orem?
A few inches of screened topsoil blended into the clay is a common target for new sod. We measure the area and check the existing soil before quoting, so you are not paying for more than you need or getting too little to do the job.
Rock or mulch for Orem beds?
Bark mulch helps beds hold moisture and slowly improves the clay as it breaks down. Rock lasts longer and works well in hot, sunny beds and park strips. Both cut culinary water use when they replace lawn, so pick based on the look you want and the sun the bed gets.
Can you replace my lawn with rock beds?
Yes. We remove the sod, cap the old sprinkler zones or convert them to drip, lay fabric, add edging and spread rock or mulch. A few water-wise plants keep it from looking like a parking lot and give the bed some shade on the soil.
Do you deliver road base for patios?
Yes. We bring in road base and compact it in thin lifts so it is ready for pavers, concrete or a shed pad. On Orem clay, that compaction is what keeps the pad from settling a year or two after it goes in.

Your dream yard. Done right. Done on time.
