Hardscaping and Concrete in American Fork

Hardscape on two kinds of American Fork ground

Most of American Fork sits on the old floor of Lake Bonneville. The USGS describes that ground as silt and clay that settles under heavy loads and loses strength when it is wet. After a hard rain, flat ground here can sit under standing water. A patio poured or laid straight on that dirt tends to sink at the corners and crack along the edges within a few winters, and we get called to tear out a lot of them.

Head east toward the canyon mouth and the ground changes. The American Fork River and Dry Creek left gravel, cobbles and boulders along the mountain front, and in parts of town that gravel sits under the silt at a depth nobody can guess from the street. So we dig before we price. A test hole tells us how much base to haul in, and it is the cheapest hour of the whole job.

We build patios, paver walkways, fire pits, outdoor kitchens, steps and plain concrete pads. Each one starts with the same work: dig out the soft stuff, lay compacted road base in lifts, and give the water a way off the slab. The pretty part on top only lasts as long as the part under it. Jackson walks the yard with you and puts the price in writing before we order anything.

American Fork sits at the foot of Timpanogos where the river comes out of the canyon, so one town runs from soft lakebed silt that ponds and settles on the flats to boulder ground at the canyon mouth, all watered on the city's metered PI schedule.

Know your American Fork ground

Elevation
About 4,613 feet
Ground
Lake Bonneville silt and clay on the flat plain that settles and ponds, river gravel under it at depths that vary, and boulder-rich fan ground at the mountain front
Secondary irrigation
American Fork runs its own metered pressurized irrigation from April 15 to October 15, with even and odd watering days that the city adjusts in dry years
Growing season
USDA zone 6a to 7a, depending on the lot, last frost around late April
Wall permits
In American Fork any fence or wall over 48 inches needs a plan and a permit from the Building Division (City Code 17.5.115), and lots on the city's hazard map can need a soils report

The American Fork challenges

What American Fork ground does to hardscape

Silt that sinks under weight

On the flat lakebed ground, the soil gets weak when it gets wet. Put a heavy outdoor kitchen or a stone fire pit on a thin base and one side can settle. We dig deeper there, add fabric where it helps and compact the base in thin layers so the load spreads out.

Boulders near the canyon mouth

On the east side, a shovel can hit cobbles and boulders a foot down. That slows the dig and changes the price, which is why we test dig first. The good news is that this ground often drains well, so once the rock is out the base can do less work.

Water with nowhere to go

Flat American Fork lots do not shed water on their own. A patio set level with the lawn acts like a dam, and snowmelt ends up against the foundation or in a window well. We slope every slab away from the house and plan where the runoff lands.

Lots on the hazard map

Parts of town fall on the city's hazard map for liquefaction, steep slopes or wetlands under City Code 17.22. A big project there can need a soils report and extra review time. We check the map for your address early so the schedule we give you is honest.

The J&H approach

How we build hardscape in American Fork

1 How we handle it

Test dig, then price

We dig a test hole where the patio or kitchen will go. Silt, gravel or rock, we see it before we write the number, so you do not get hit with a change order once the machine is already in your yard.

2 How we handle it

Base built in thin lifts

Road base goes down a few inches at a time, and each layer gets compacted. On the lakebed silt we go deeper and use fabric to keep the base from pushing into the soft ground. Pavers and slabs then sit on something that does not move.

3 How we handle it

Gas, power and drains planned first

Fire features and outdoor kitchens need gas, power and sometimes a drain. We run the sleeves and lines before the base goes in, so nobody has to cut into a finished patio two summers from now.

American Fork questions

Hardscaping and Concrete in American Fork: what people ask

Why do so many American Fork patios settle?
Much of the city sits on Lake Bonneville silt and clay, which the USGS rates as poor ground for heavy loads. It settles, and it gets soft when wet. A patio laid on a thin base over that soil sinks over a few winters. A deeper, compacted base fixes most of it.
Do pavers or concrete hold up better here?
Both work when the base is right. Pavers flex a little and can be lifted and reset if one spot settles, which helps on the softer west-side ground. Concrete makes sense for big plain areas. We often mix them, with a concrete pad by the garage and pavers out back.
Do I need a permit for an outdoor kitchen or fire pit?
It depends on what goes in it. Gas and electrical work usually goes through the Building Division, and any wall over 48 inches needs a plan and a permit. We confirm the current rules with American Fork and your HOA before we build anything.
Can you build hardscape in the winter?
Some of it. Digging and base work can go on when the ground is not frozen, and pavers can go down on a cold, dry day. Concrete needs warmer weather to cure right, so pours usually wait for spring. Planning over the winter lets you start the week the ground allows.

Your dream yard. Done right. Done on time.
