Landscape Design in Salem

A Salem plan starts with the water

Water shapes almost every design choice in Salem. Some of it is under your feet: parts of town sit over shallow groundwater from Salem Pond and the Water Canyon springs. Some of it comes through the pipe: Salem's pressurized irrigation runs on Strawberry Highline Canal water, roughly April to October, and it has been metered since 2023. A plan that does not deal with both leaves you with soggy corners or a high water bill, and sometimes both.

We design and build with the same team, and that matters a lot in Salem. Across 200+ projects in Utah County, we have learned that drainage is where a drawing and a real yard drift apart. The grade on paper has to match the clay on site. When the crew that builds the yard also drew it, the drains, grades and wall heights get decided by people who will be standing in that dirt.

A full Salem design covers grading and drainage, patios and paths, walls where the lot slopes, a sprinkler system zoned for metered water, lawn and planting, lights and shade. Near the pond, we pick plants that can take wet roots. On the Salem Hills bench, we plan terraces and views toward Loafer Mountain. Jackson walks the lot with you, and you get one plan and one written price.

Salem grew up around a spring-fed pond, and it shows: parts of town sit over shallow groundwater, so drainage and hardscape footings near the low areas need a real plan, not a guess.

Elevation
About 4,613 feet
Ground
Lake Bonneville clay and silt that holds water and moves
Secondary irrigation
Salem's pressurized irrigation runs on Strawberry Highline Canal water, roughly April to October, depending on canal availability
Growing season
USDA zone 6b to 7a, last frost mid-to-late May
Wall permits
In Salem a wall over 4 feet, or with an exposed face over 30 inches, or holding a surcharge, needs a permit and engineered plans (City Code 10-12-13), and walls over 10 feet must be terraced

The Salem challenges

Where Salem yard plans miss

Lawn where it does not belong

Big lawns cost more on a metered system, and they do poorly on low, wet ground near the pond. Lots of Salem yards have grass in the two worst places for it: soggy low spots that never dry and hot, steep banks that never stay wet.

Plants that drown in wet clay

Many shrubs and trees sold in this valley want ground that drains. In Salem's wet clay near the springs, their roots sit in water and rot. They look fine the first year, then thin out and die back, and nobody can tell you why.

Wall rules that change the plan

On a sloped Salem lot, a design that needs a wall with an exposed face over 30 inches, or one holding up a patio, sets off permits and engineering. Find that out after the design is done, and the budget is already wrong.

Canal timing and late frost

Salem's secondary water depends on when the canal water is available, and the last frost can run into mid-to-late May. A design that counts on early spring planting or early water can miss its window by a month or more.

The J&H approach

How we design a Salem yard

1 How we handle it

Soil, water and slope first

We start with a lot walk. We check the soil, look for wet spots, measure the slope, and note the sun and the views. Then we talk about how you want to use the yard and what you are comfortable spending.

2 How we handle it

Right plant in the right spot

We put lawn where it drains and where you will use it, plants that tolerate wet roots in the low areas, and tougher, drier plantings on the banks. Every zone gets its own watering, so the meter only runs where it needs to.

3 How we handle it

Drawn and built by J&H

The finished plan shows the grades, walls, hardscape, sprinkler zones, planting and lights, and it comes with a single written price. Then our crew builds it. If the ground surprises us, Jackson adjusts on site instead of sending it back to a designer.

Salem questions

Landscape Design in Salem: what people ask

Can you design a yard that uses less metered water?
Yes. We size the lawn to what you will actually use, put beds on drip, group plants by how much water they need, and set the sprinkler zones to match. On Salem's metered system, those choices show up on the bill every month of the season.
What plants handle wet ground near Salem Pond?
Some shrubs, grasses and trees put up with wet roots far better than others. We pick from plants that handle Salem's zone 6b to 7a winters and damp clay, and we improve the drainage where we can, which opens up more choices.
Can I build my Salem design over a few years?
Yes. Grading, drainage, walls and the sprinkler main usually come first, because those are hard to add once the yard is finished. Patios, planting and extras can come in the next season without tearing up the first round of work.
Do you design for the Salem Hills slope?
Yes. Most Salem Hills lots need terraces or walls before there is any flat ground to use. We lay out those walls with Salem's code in mind, plan for the view toward Loafer Mountain or out over the valley, and set drains to catch runoff from above.

Your dream yard. Done right. Done on time.
