Landscape Design in Spanish Fork

A Spanish Fork yard plan starts with which way the wind blows

Most yard plans start with a pretty drawing. A Spanish Fork plan has to start with the wind. Most nights, cold air slides down out of Spanish Fork Canyon and crosses town in one steady direction. That one fact decides where the patio feels good after dinner, where the fire pit goes, which side gets the tall screen plants, and how the sprinklers are zoned. Skip it, and the drawing only looks right on calm days.

Then come the ground and the water. Much of Spanish Fork sits on Lake Bonneville silt, with river alluvium near the Spanish Fork River. The city runs its own pressurized irrigation from about April 15 to October 15, and it offers a free smart controller. A good plan puts thirsty lawn only where you will use it, drip in the beds, and that controller set up the right way.

We draw one plan for the whole yard, front and back, and the same team builds it. That way the patio grade, the wall drains, the sprinkler mains and the planting all fit together. J&H has done 200+ projects across Utah County, and Jackson stays on your plan from the first walk to the last plant. You can build the whole plan now or a piece at a time.

Spanish Fork has the biggest canyon airshed on the Wasatch Front, and the nightly downslope wind is the single thing an outside crew gets wrong here: it dries lawns and blows sprinkler spray right off target.

The Spanish Fork challenges

Where Spanish Fork yard plans go wrong

A plan drawn for a calm yard

Plans copied from a catalog, or drawn by someone who never stood in your yard in the evening, put the seating out in the open and the shade sail right in the wind's path. In Spanish Fork that means a patio nobody sits on after sundown and windward plants that brown out by July.

Pieces built by different crews

When a patio guy, a sprinkler guy and a planting crew each do their part, nobody owns the grade. The patio slopes onto the lawn, the sprinkler main runs right where the fire pit should go, and the beds catch the runoff. On flat Spanish Fork lots that turns into soggy spots and dead spots fast.

Lawn where nobody uses it

A lot of yards here have lawn wall to wall because that was the default. Big open turf is the hardest thing to water evenly in the canyon wind, and it drinks a lot over the city's season. Most families use a small part of it. The rest could be beds, a court or a patio.

Phases with no master plan

Plenty of people build a yard over a few years. Without a plan, phase two rips out phase one: the new patio needs the sprinkler moved, or the court needs the wall you just paid for. A Spanish Fork plan should show where pipe, power and drains go before the first piece is built.

The J&H approach

How we design Spanish Fork yards

1 How we handle it

Walk the lot, read the wind

We start on your lot, not at a desk. We look at which trees lean, where snow drifts, which fence panels are stressed, and where your family actually hangs out. That tells us where to shelter the seating and where the tough, wind-tolerant plants belong.

2 How we handle it

One plan, one crew

Our design covers grading, drainage, hardscape, sprinklers, lighting and planting on one set of drawings. The same J&H crew that draws it builds it. That means the patio slope, the sprinkler main and the bed drains are planned to work together from day one.

3 How we handle it

Water planned for the city season

We zone lawn, beds and trees separately, use drip in the beds and low-angle rotors on the lawn, and set up Spanish Fork's free smart controller so it adjusts through the April to October season instead of running the same schedule all summer.

Spanish Fork questions

Landscape Design in Spanish Fork: what people ask

What does a design plan include?
Your plan shows grading and drainage, patios and walls, the sprinkler layout with zones, lighting and planting. It is drawn for your Spanish Fork lot, including the wind side and the soil you have. You can build it with us all at once, or in phases over a couple of seasons.
Can you design around the canyon wind?
That is the first thing we design around. We place seating in the lee of the house or a wall, put wind-tolerant trees and shrubs on the exposed side, and zone the water so spray stays on target. A plan that ignores the wind will not work well in Spanish Fork.
Can I build my yard in phases?
Yes. We draw the whole yard first, then mark the order to build it. Pipe sleeves under patios and power for future lights go in early, so a later phase does not tear up an earlier one. Lots of people start with the backyard and save the front for later.

Your dream yard. Done right. Done on time.
