Fencing, Decks and Pergolas in Saratoga Springs

Saratoga Springs fence rules come first

Saratoga Springs keeps its fence rules short. In a front yard, fences over 3 feet are not allowed. Anywhere else, going over 6 feet takes case-by-case approval, and no fence can ever go over 8 feet. A fence sitting on a retaining wall is measured from the high side. Those numbers settle a lot of the design before anyone picks a color or a style, so that is where we start every fence job in town.

There is also a back yard rule most people never hear about. The city expects back yards to be fully landscaped. But if your back yard is fully closed in by a 6 foot privacy fence that runs down to the ground, the code lets you use a stabilized protective ground cover instead. For a family that needs a season or two before the full back yard, the right fence can buy real breathing room.

Decks and pergolas bring their own questions. Many Jacobs Ranch lots look out over Utah Lake and the valley, and a deck or shade structure should frame that view, not block it. Open lots catch wind, too. During the 2020 Knolls Fire, winds hit nearly 60 miles an hour here. A pergola needs footings and joints built to take a gust like that without racking or lifting.

Saratoga Springs went from about 1,000 people in 2000 to an estimated 61,000 in 2025, so most yards here started as bare dirt on a city deadline, watered by a metered pressurized line that charges more once you pass your lot's allotment.

The Saratoga Springs challenges

Fence and deck problems we see here

Front yard fences over 3 feet

Saratoga Springs caps front yard fences at 3 feet. A taller decorative fence along the sidewalk can bring a notice and a tear-out. We check exactly where your front yard ends before we set a single post, so the tall privacy run starts in the right spot.

Posts that lean after a windy spring

Shallow posts in loose new-build dirt are the usual failure. A 6 foot privacy panel acts like a sail in a gust. Once a few posts lean, the whole run follows them over. Concrete footings set deep enough for the soil and the wind are what keep a fence straight.

Decks that block the view

A deck built too high or too wide can block your own view of the lake, or put you face to face with the neighbor's kitchen window. We mock up the height on site with stakes and string, so you see the sight lines before anything gets built.

Building near the foothill fire zone

Hillside development plans in Saratoga Springs have to follow the Utah Wildland-Urban Interface Code. If your lot sits up toward Lake Mountain, that can affect what a deck or pergola is made of. We check current rules with the city and your HOA before we order any lumber.

The J&H approach

How we build fences, decks and pergolas

1 How we handle it

Height checked against code

We measure from the right spot, including the high side when a fence sits on a wall, and keep front yard fences at 3 feet or under. Anything over 6 feet goes to the city for approval before we build, and we never plan a fence past the 8 foot limit.

2 How we handle it

Footings built for wind

Fence posts, deck piers and pergola columns go in concrete footings sized for the load and set below frost depth. Pergola beams get real hardware at every joint, so a strong gust off the open lots does not rack the frame or pull a post loose.

3 How we handle it

Built around how you use the yard

We put the deck where the evening light and the view are best, and set pergola shade over the spots you actually sit. Gates go where the mower and the trash cans need to pass, and we make them wide enough for equipment if more yard work is coming.

Saratoga Springs questions

Fencing, Decks and Pergolas in Saratoga Springs: what people ask

How tall can my back yard fence be in Saratoga Springs?
Six feet is the usual limit. Going over 6 feet needs approval case by case, and no fence can be over 8 feet. Front yard fences are capped at 3 feet. Your HOA may also have rules on height, style and color, so we confirm both sets of rules before we build.
Can a privacy fence help with the back yard landscaping rule?
It can. City code lets a back yard that is fully enclosed by a 6 foot privacy fence, run to the ground, use a stabilized protective ground cover instead of full landscaping. Your front and street-side yards still have their own deadline. We check the details with the city for your lot.
Do I need a permit for a deck or pergola?
That depends on the size, the height and whether it attaches to the house. We confirm current rules with Saratoga Springs and your HOA before we start, and we pull any permit the job needs. You will know before we break ground, not after an inspector drives by.
What fence holds up best to wind in Saratoga Springs?
A solid privacy fence catches the most wind, so it needs the deepest footings and the stoutest posts. Styles with small gaps between boards let some air through and put less strain on the posts. We look at how exposed your lot is and set post spacing and footing depth to match.

Your dream yard. Done right. Done on time.
