Topsoil and Materials in Vineyard

Better dirt for Vineyard lots

Much of Vineyard is new development on the old Geneva Steel site near the lake, and a new home rarely comes with good soil out back. Builders grade the lot and heavy equipment packs it down. Under that sits the natural lake ground, fine silt and clay that holds water. Sod laid straight onto that mix tends to root shallow and struggle by midsummer.

Good topsoil gives roots somewhere to go. Screened topsoil has the rocks and clods sifted out, so it spreads smooth and sod lies flat. Landscape rock covers beds and helps keep weeds down, which counts in a city that treats weeds over 4 inches as a nuisance. Fill dirt brings low spots back up, and road base goes under patios, paths and pads.

Ordering is easy. Call or text us what you need and roughly how much. You can pick it up at our Provo yard, a short drive south of Vineyard, or have it dropped off at your place and billed for that location. Not sure how much to get? Send us the measurements and we will help you figure the cubic yards.

Vineyard is the young town on the lake: flat, newer lots on silty ground by Utah Lake, mostly watered with metered city water, where the job is making a smaller yard work hard.

Elevation
About 4,521 feet
Ground
Fine Lake Bonneville silt and clay near Utah Lake, where groundwater tends to run high
Secondary irrigation
Vineyard runs no secondary irrigation for most homes, so lawns water off metered city drinking water with no on and off dates

USDA zone 7a, last frost late April
Wall permits
In Vineyard a retaining wall over 4 feet generally needs a permit under the state residential code the city uses, and we confirm the current rule with Vineyard

The Vineyard challenges

Soil problems on Vineyard lots

Packed ground under new sod

Construction traffic packs the soil on a new lot hard. Sod rolled out over it sends roots an inch or two down and then stops. Water runs off instead of soaking in, and on metered city water you pay for every gallon that heads down the gutter.

Silt that stays soggy

Lake silt and clay hold water a long time. Spread a thin layer of topsoil right on top and water can pool where the two layers meet. Loosening the ground first and mixing a little at the line helps water keep moving down.

Low spots after settling

New yards settle, mostly along the foundation and over utility trenches. Those dips collect water. Fill dirt packed in layers brings them back to grade before any topsoil goes on top. Skip that step and the new lawn sinks right back into the same dip a year later.

A weak base under hardscape

A paver path or shed pad set on plain dirt sinks on soft lake soil. Road base packed in thin lifts gives it something firm to sit on. Skipping it to save a load costs you more when the path has to be reset.

The J&H approach

How ordering works

1 How we handle it

Tell us the job

Call or text with what you are working on: new sod, planting beds, a patio base or raising a low corner. We tell you which material fits and help you work out how many yards to order.

2 How we handle it

Pick up or drop off

Grab it at our Provo yard with your own truck or trailer, or have it delivered to your Vineyard driveway. We ask where you want it dumped so it is not blocking the garage or the sidewalk.

3 How we handle it

Spread it right

If you want us to install it, we loosen packed ground, spread to grade and compact base material in lifts. If you are doing it yourself, we tell you how deep to go for each use.

Vineyard questions

Topsoil and Materials in Vineyard: what people ask

How much topsoil do I need for new sod in Vineyard?
It depends on what is under it. On packed new-build ground, plan a few inches of screened topsoil over loosened soil, and more in planting beds. Send us your square footage and we will turn it into cubic yards so you only order once.
Do you deliver to Vineyard?
Yes. Call or text your order and we can drop it off at your Vineyard home, billed for that location. If you have a truck or trailer, you can also pick it up at our Provo yard.
What is road base for?
Road base is crushed rock mixed with fines that packs hard. It goes under patios, pavers, walkways, sport courts and shed pads. On Vineyard's soft lake soil, a packed road base layer is what keeps those from sinking.
What landscape rock works in Vineyard yards?
Angular rock locks together and stays put, which helps on open new lots that catch valley wind. Rounded rock looks softer in beds. Lighter colors stay a bit cooler near the house in summer. Tell us the spot and we will point you to a good fit.

Your dream yard. Done right. Done on time.
