Landscape Design in Elk Ridge

Designing a yard that fits the mountain

An Elk Ridge yard starts with the slope. The house steps down the hill, and the yard has to step with it. A good design decides where the flat spaces go, how tall each wall is, and how water moves from the top of the lot to the bottom. Get those three things right and the rest falls into place. Get them wrong and no amount of nice planting will save it.

Then we design for the mountain itself. Deer browse plants in winter, so the plant list leans toward what they leave alone. Frost can hang on into mid-May at 5,361 feet, so we pick plants that can take the cold. And because Elk Ridge has no secondary irrigation, how much lawn you keep and how you water it matter more here than in most of the valley. We plan the lawn around how you live, not the other way around.

We design it and we build it. Jackson walks the lot with you. The plan shows every wall, terrace, patio, bed and sprinkler zone, and the price comes in writing. You can build it all at once or in phases. Because the same crew builds what we draw, nothing gets lost between the drawing and the dirt. Most Elk Ridge plans start with the walls, because everything else rests on them.

Elk Ridge is the high, steep one, up around 5,361 feet on Loafer Mountain, where almost every lot is a hillside lot the city code steps down the slope, and the deer, wind and snow are all real.

Elevation
About 5,361 feet
Ground
Gravelly alluvial-fan ground on the shoulder of Loafer Mountain
Secondary irrigation
Elk Ridge runs no secondary system, so how your lot is watered is confirmed with the city
Growing season
USDA zone 6b to 7a, last frost mid-May
Wall permits
In Elk Ridge any retaining wall over 4 feet needs a permit and usually engineering, and the hillside code steps homes down the slope instead of carving a flat pad

The Elk Ridge challenges

What an Elk Ridge design has to solve

A slope that drives everything

On a steep Elk Ridge lot, every choice ties back to grading and walls. Move the patio three feet downhill and the wall under it might need to be twice as tall. A plan made without the grades in hand tends to blow the budget the day digging starts.

Deer reading the plant list

A design full of plants deer love will be chewed down every winter. Hostas, tulips and young fruit trees are open invitations. The planting has to be chosen with the deer in mind from the start, not swapped out after the first loss.

Water without a secondary system

Elk Ridge has no secondary irrigation. A big thirsty lawn on a slope wastes water as runoff. The design has to match lawn to how you use it and group plants by water need. We confirm with the city how your lot is watered.

A cold, late spring

With frost possible into mid-May and plenty of snow, the planting window here opens later than in the valley. Plant choice and timing both have to fit that, or new plants spend their first year just trying to survive. On most lots we schedule planting for late May.

The J&H approach

How we design Elk Ridge yards

1 How we handle it

The grading plan comes first

We start with the levels: terraces, walls and drainage. Patios, lawn and beds get placed on top of that plan, so the design you fall in love with is one that can actually be built on your slope.

2 How we handle it

Plants for deer and elevation

We pick hardy plants that deer tend to pass up and that handle the cold at this height. If you want something deer love, we put it near the house or behind a fence where it has a fighting chance.

3 How we handle it

Zones that save water

We keep lawn where you use it, put drip on beds and slopes, and zone the sprinklers so water soaks into the hillside instead of running down it toward the street. Each zone gets its own run time, set for its slope and sun.

Elk Ridge questions

Landscape Design in Elk Ridge: what people ask

Can the design be built in phases?
Yes. On Elk Ridge lots we usually build the walls and grading first, since everything else sits on them. Patios, planting and lighting can follow when you are ready. Each phase gets its own written price, so you always know what is next.
Will you design around the deer?
Yes. We pick plants deer tend to leave alone, keep the tasty ones close to the house or behind a fence, and protect young trees with guards for their first few winters. No plan is fully deer-proof, but this one keeps the losses small.
How much lawn should I keep in Elk Ridge?
Only what you will use. With no secondary irrigation and sloped ground, extra lawn costs water and sends runoff down the hill. We size the lawn for kids, dogs and play, and use planting and rock on the slopes where grass struggles anyway.

Your dream yard. Done right. Done on time.
