Topsoil and Materials in Alpine

Dirt, rock and base for Alpine lots

We sell five things: topsoil, screened topsoil, landscape rock, fill dirt and road base. Call or text us with what you need and roughly how much. You can pick it up at our yard in Provo or have it dropped off at your Alpine home, and you are billed at pickup or drop-off. If it is part of a project we are building for you, our crew spreads and grades it too.

Alpine ground changes a lot from one lot to the next. Some yards near the old town center are fairly flat. Up toward Lambert Park, Box Elder and the mountain edge, lots slope and the city flags tricky soils. That changes what you order. A new terrace needs good topsoil to plant into. A court pad or patio needs road base. A low spot that needs raising takes fill, placed and compacted, not dumped.

The steep driveways are worth a word. A lot of Alpine homes sit up a grade, and a loaded truck needs a safe spot to drop. Tell us where you want the pile when you call, and if the drive is steep or tight, we will talk through the best place to set it. A pile of topsoil on a slope can end up in the gutter after the first big storm.

Alpine is the big-lot town on the mountain edge under Lone Peak, where engineered walls, metered secondary water, deer on the bench and the memory of the 2012 Quail Fire all shape what a yard can be.

Know your Alpine ground

Elevation
About 5,049 feet
Ground
Mountain-front ground that changes from lot to lot, with the city mapping debris flow, rockfall and touchy soils near the mountain edge
Secondary irrigation
Alpine runs its own pressurized secondary irrigation, metered and billed in tiers, with odd and even watering days, night-only hours and a shutoff around mid-October
Growing season
USDA zone 6b to 7a, last frost often in May, later than down in the valley
Wall permits
In Alpine a retaining wall over about 4 feet needs a permit and a design by a Utah-licensed engineer, and lots above 5,350 feet fall under the city's Sensitive Lands hillside rules

The Alpine challenges

Common Alpine material mix-ups

Thin topsoil on new terraces

Freshly built terraces are often packed fill. Spread a skim of topsoil over that and the shrubs Alpine asks for on visible terraces will struggle. Planting areas need enough good soil for roots to take hold before the July heat shows up.

Fill used where base belongs

Fill dirt is for raising grade. It is not made to carry a patio or a court. Under hardscape you want road base, placed in thin lifts and compacted. Mix them up and the surface settles, usually right where you notice it.

Ordering short on a big lot

Alpine yards are big, and it is easy to guess low. A second trip costs more than getting it right the first time. Measure the area and the depth, or send us the numbers and we will help you work it out before you order.

Rock that rolls down the slope

Rounded rock looks nice but rolls on a hill. On sloped Alpine beds, angular landscape rock locks together and stays put through snowmelt. Pick the rock for where it is going on your lot, not only for the color in the photo.

The J&H approach

How ordering works in Alpine

1 How we handle it

Call or text to order

Tell us what you need, how much, and where it is going. If you are not sure on the amount, give us the size of the area and how deep you want it, and we will help with the math so the order comes out close.

2 How we handle it

Pick up in Provo or drop-off

Pick up at our Provo yard if you have a truck or trailer, or we drop it off at your Alpine home. You are billed at pickup or at drop-off. Steep drives get a quick talk first, so the truck sets the load where it is safe.

3 How we handle it

Spread when it is part of a job

When the material goes into a yard we are building, our crew places it: topsoil loosened in at the right depth, fill compacted in lifts, and road base set and tamped under patios and courts.

Alpine questions

Topsoil and Materials in Alpine: what people ask

What materials do you sell?
Topsoil, screened topsoil, landscape rock, fill dirt and road base. That is the full list. Call or text to order, then pick it up at our Provo yard or have it dropped off at your Alpine home.
Can you deliver up a steep Alpine driveway?
Often, yes. It depends on the grade, the turn and what is overhead. Tell us about the drive when you call. If the truck cannot get up safely, we will find a flatter spot nearby where the load will not slide into the street.
Screened or regular topsoil?
Screened topsoil has rocks, roots and clods pulled out, so it spreads smooth for lawn and planting beds. Regular topsoil costs less and is fine for filling and rough grading. On visible terraces and new lawns, screened is the better pick.
What do I use under a patio or court?
Road base. It packs tight and carries weight. Fill dirt is for raising grade and will settle under a slab. Lay road base in thin lifts and compact each one, or have our crew do it as part of the job.

Your dream yard. Done right. Done on time.
