Landscape Design in Saratoga Springs

One plan for the whole Saratoga yard

Saratoga Springs has more landscape rules than most homeowners expect. At least 25 percent of a front yard has to be planted instead of rock or hardscape. Park strips come with their own list of what is allowed and what is banned. Artificial turf out front needs an application and has to meet specs. A design that skips those rules can look great on paper and then stall at the HOA or the city counter.

Water is the other half of the plan. Your pressurized irrigation is metered, and each lot has an allotment tied to the water bought when the lot was developed. Go past it and the rate climbs. The city's Irrigation Calculator shows your lot's number. We size the lawn, the beds and the drip zones to fit inside it, so the yard you love does not come with a July bill you hate.

Then we design for the people. Kids, dogs, a fire pit, a garden, maybe a court, a view of Utah Lake from the back deck. One design covers the whole lot, front to back, so the pieces fit and get built in the right order. Jackson draws it, prices it and our crew builds it. You never hand one company's plan to another company and hope it lines up.

Saratoga Springs went from about 1,000 people in 2000 to an estimated 61,000 in 2025, so most yards here started as bare dirt on a city deadline, watered by a metered pressurized line that charges more once you pass your lot's allotment.

About 4,547 feet
Ground
Alkaline, high-lime Utah ground, with shallow groundwater more likely on the low lots toward Utah Lake and the Jordan River

Saratoga Springs runs a city pressurized irrigation system, charged the week of April 15 and drained the week of October 15, and all of it is metered against your lot's allotment
Growing season
USDA zone 7a on the 2023 USDA map (6b on the older map), last frost early May, roughly May 1 to May 10
Wall permits
In Saratoga Springs a retaining wall 4 feet or taller of unbalanced fill, or one holding a surcharge, needs a building permit, and slopes of 15 percent or more fall under the Hillside Development chapter, 19.10

The Saratoga Springs challenges

Design mistakes that cost Saratoga homeowners

All-rock front yards

Rock looks low-water and easy. But Saratoga Springs needs at least 25 percent of front and corner side yard landscaping to be planted beds, shrubs or grasses, not rock or hardscape. A front yard that is all rock can fail review and have to be partly torn out and replanted.

Plants that hate alkaline soil

Utah soils carry a lot of lime, from 15 to more than 40 percent by weight in Utah State University's numbers, and that is very hard to change. Plants that want acid soil turn yellow and quit. A good plant list starts with what grows happily in high-pH ground and a zone 7a winter.

Designs that blow past the allotment

A big lawn in full sun on a metered line can drink past your lot's allotment by midsummer. After that, every gallon costs more. The drawing is the cheapest place to fix it, by sizing the lawn to how your family really uses it and putting beds on drip.

Park strips left for last

Park strips have to be landscaped when the front yard is done. Gravel, concrete, fruit trees, gardens and big boulders are not allowed. If you use rock, cobble or pavers, at least 30 percent has to be plants. We draw the strip into the plan from day one.

The J&H approach

How we design a Saratoga Springs yard

1 How we handle it

We start with your lot's numbers

Before we draw a line, we look up your water allotment, check the slope, note where storm water runs and see where the sun and wind hit. Those numbers decide how big the lawn gets and where the patio, the fire pit and the drains go.

2 How we handle it

Code and HOA built into the drawing

The 25 percent front planting rule, the park strip limits, fence heights and turf specs all go into the plan. If you have an HOA, we draw it so you can submit it as is. We verify the current city and HOA rules for your lot as part of the design.

3 How we handle it

Phased to your deadline

If you are on the 1 year front and 2 year back clock, we design the whole yard now and build the front first. Sprinkler mains and sleeves go in toward the back during phase one, so phase two does not mean digging up a lawn you just paid for.

Saratoga Springs questions

Landscape Design in Saratoga Springs: what people ask

How much of my front yard has to be plants in Saratoga Springs?
City code says at least 25 percent of front yard and corner side yard landscaping must be non-rock planter beds, shrubs, grasses or other planting that is not rock or hardscape. Rock and paving do not count toward that share. We lay out the front so it clears the rule and still looks finished.
Can I have a vegetable garden?
Yes, just not in the park strip, where gardens and fruit trees are banned. In the back yard, plan for the water. The city says its pressurized irrigation can carry dissolved solids and asks people to wash garden produce. We put edible beds on drip and close to a spigot for rinsing.
Do you only design, or do you build too?
We do both, under one contract. Jackson draws the plan and walks you through it, then our crew builds it. If you want to spread the work over two seasons, the plan shows what goes in first and how the rest ties in later, so nothing gets torn out.
How do I find my lot's water allotment?
Saratoga Springs has an Irrigation Calculator on the city website that shows your lot's allotment. During the season, the My Water Use portal shows your use by the hour. We use both to size the lawn and the zones, so the design fits the water you really have.

Your dream yard. Done right. Done on time.
