Pickleball and Sports Courts in Vineyard

Making room to play in Vineyard

A regulation pickleball court is 20 by 44 feet, and you want room to move around it. That fits on some Vineyard lots and not on others. A lot of newer homes here sit on smaller yards with 6 foot fences close in on three sides. So before we talk surface colors, we measure what you have and tell you straight what will fit.

If a full court is too much, there are good options. A half court with a pickleball line is great for dinking and for kids learning. A sport pad with a basketball hoop and a net sleeve covers more games. A putting green can tuck into a side yard too narrow for anything else. The right answer is the setup your family will actually walk out and use.

Then comes the base. A court has to stay flat, and lake silt under a slab moves when it is wet and poorly packed. We dig out soft soil, build road base back up in packed lifts and give the slab just enough slope to shed water. Lights get aimed down at the court, because in Vineyard the neighbor's bedroom window is often right over the fence.

Vineyard is the young town on the lake: flat, newer lots on silty ground by Utah Lake, mostly watered with metered city water, where the job is making a smaller yard work hard.

Ground
Fine Lake Bonneville silt and clay near Utah Lake, where groundwater tends to run high
Secondary irrigation
Vineyard runs no secondary irrigation for most homes, so lawns water off metered city drinking water with no on and off dates

USDA zone 7a, last frost late April
Wall permits
In Vineyard a retaining wall over 4 feet generally needs a permit under the state residential code the city uses, and we confirm the current rule with Vineyard

The Vineyard challenges

What makes courts tricky in Vineyard

Small lots and close fences

Many Vineyard lots leave little room behind the house once the patio is in. A court squeezed too tight means balls over the fence and players running into it. We paint the outline on your lawn so you can see the real size before anything gets poured.

A flat slab on wet ground

A court has to stay flat for the ball to bounce true. On silty soil near Utah Lake, a thin base settles and leaves birdbaths after every rain. A deep, well packed base and a slight slope keep the surface playable for years.

Fence height rules

Vineyard caps rear and side yard fences at 6 feet. Court fencing often runs taller to keep balls in. We check what the city and your HOA allow before we order panels, and plan around it with netting or layout if the answer is no.

Lights and close neighbors

On a small lot, a court light can shine straight into the house next door. We use shielded fixtures aimed down at the playing surface and put them on a timer so the light stays on your court and shuts off at a set hour.

The J&H approach

How we build courts in Vineyard

1 How we handle it

Size it to the yard

We start with a tape and a sketch, not a catalog. If a full pickleball court fits with safe room around it, great. If not, we show you a half court, a sport pad or a green that fits the space and still gets used.

2 How we handle it

A base built for lake soil

We remove soft soil, lay road base in thin lifts and compact each one. The slab gets a slight fall for drainage and control joints placed so cracks do not run right through the kitchen line.

3 How we handle it

Finish, fence and light it

We add the court surface, lines, net posts and whatever fencing or netting your HOA allows. Lighting is shielded and aimed down, with wiring run before the pour so nobody has to cut a trench across the yard later.

Vineyard questions

Pickleball and Sports Courts in Vineyard: what people ask

Will a pickleball court fit in my Vineyard backyard?
Maybe. The court is 20 by 44 feet, and a comfortable play area runs bigger than that. Plenty of newer Vineyard yards get too tight for a full court once you leave room for a patio. We measure and mark it out on your lot so you decide with real numbers.
Do I need HOA approval for a sport court?
In most Vineyard neighborhoods with an HOA, yes. Boards usually want to see the size, fencing, lights and colors. We give you a simple plan sheet for the submittal and wait for approval before we break ground.
Can I add a putting green next to the court?
Yes, and it is a good use of an odd corner or a narrow side yard. We build the green on a packed, drained base and edge it cleanly against the court or patio so the two read as one plan.

Your dream yard. Done right. Done on time.
