Pickleball and Sports Courts in Orem

Swap the lawn for a court in Orem

Plenty of Orem backyards have a big rectangle of lawn that mostly gets mowed. On culinary water, that lawn is one of the largest lines on your summer bill. A pickleball or sport court in the same spot gets used a lot more, and it does not need a drop of water. That trade is worth thinking about in Orem in a way it is not in towns running cheap secondary water.

Orem's flat bench lots give you a good head start. A regulation court is 20 by 44 feet, and with room to move most backyard courts take about 30 by 60. A lot of older Orem lots have that kind of space. The catch is the clay under it. A court slab is big and thin, and Lake Bonneville clay heaves unevenly when it freezes. One soft corner and you have a low spot right at the kitchen line.

We build the base for that ground, fence the court so balls stay in your yard, and aim the lights down so the neighbors stay friendly. If a full court will not fit, a half court or a putting green might. Jackson will measure the yard and show you what actually fits before you spend anything, including where the old sprinkler lines run under the grass.

Orem is the one town around here with no secondary water, so the sprinkler design shows up on your culinary bill in a way it does not for the neighbors.

The Orem challenges

What a backyard court runs into in Orem

A big slab on moving clay

Clay under a court gets wet in different spots at different times, especially near old sprinkler lines. When it freezes, it lifts unevenly. That cracks the slab and opens low spots that hold water across the playing lines after every storm.

Old sprinkler lines in the way

A court going in where the lawn used to be sits right on top of the old irrigation. Those lines need to be capped, rerouted or pulled out. Leave them, and a slow leak under the slab softens the base and wastes culinary water you never see.

Close neighbors and noise

Orem's older subdivisions have lots close together with fences right on the line. Pickleball is loud and court lights carry. Court placement, fence height, a planted screen and careful light aim all help keep the peace with the people next door.

Wind off Provo Canyon

On the east side near the canyon, evening gusts push the ball around and blow leaves and grit onto the court. Windscreen on the fence and tucking the court in the lee of the house both help a lot on those breezy summer nights.

The J&H approach

How we build Orem courts

1 How we handle it

Clear the old lawn and lines

We strip the sod, cap or reroute old sprinkler zones, and dig out the soft clay. That gives the court a dry, clean start, and it drops the water use for that part of the yard to zero from the first summer.

2 How we handle it

Compacted base, reinforced slab

Road base goes down in thin, compacted lifts, then a reinforced slab poured with a slight slope to shed water. After it cures it gets an acrylic sport surface and lines. Net posts sit in their own footings so they stay put.

3 How we handle it

Fence, windscreen, lights and greens

We fence the court, add windscreen where the canyon wind hits, and aim lights down and in. A synthetic putting green on the leftover lawn space is a good fit too, and it needs no water either.

Orem questions

Pickleball and Sports Courts in Orem: what people ask

How much space does a pickleball court need in Orem?
A regulation pickleball court is 20 by 44 feet, and most backyard courts take about 30 by 60 feet with room around the lines. Many Orem lots fit that. If yours is tighter, a half court or a shorter run-out still plays well for family games.
Will replacing lawn with a court lower my water bill?
Yes. Orem lawns run on tiered culinary water, and a court needs none. The more summer lawn you replace, the more of your heaviest water use goes away. We also fix the zones that are left so they stop overwatering what remains.
Do I need a permit for a court, fence or lights in Orem?
A ground-level court usually does not, but tall fences, lighting and new electrical work can have rules of their own. We check with Orem City Building Safety before we build, so the court does not turn into a problem with the city later.
Can you add a putting green?
Yes. We build putting greens on compacted gravel with synthetic turf, which plays well from spring into late fall and needs no culinary water. It fits nicely next to a court or a patio, or in a side yard where grass never grew right.

Your dream yard. Done right. Done on time.
