Landscape Design in Vineyard

A small yard needs a real plan

On a big lot you can get away with adding things one at a time. On a typical Vineyard lot you cannot. The patio, the lawn, the beds, the fence and the sprinklers all fight for the same small space. When they go in piece by piece, you end up cutting through last year's work to make room for this year's. One plan for the whole yard avoids that.

Water shapes the plan here more than in most of Utah County. Most Vineyard homes have no secondary water, so lawns and beds run on metered city drinking water. The city's General Plan pushes water-wise yards, and lawn rules for new yards are tightening across the county. We design the front yard to look full and cared for with less grass, and save the lawn for where you actually play.

Then we think about how you live outside. Shade for a patio that bakes all afternoon. A pergola or a row of narrow trees so you are not staring into the next window. Low lights along the path for evenings after the kids are down. We draw all of it, price it in phases if you want and then build it, so the parts you add later still fit.

Vineyard is the young town on the lake: flat, newer lots on silty ground by Utah Lake, mostly watered with metered city water, where the job is making a smaller yard work hard.

Ground
Fine Lake Bonneville silt and clay near Utah Lake, where groundwater tends to run high
Secondary irrigation
Vineyard runs no secondary irrigation for most homes, so lawns water off metered city drinking water with no on and off dates
Growing season
USDA zone 7a, last frost late April
Wall permits
In Vineyard a retaining wall over 4 feet generally needs a permit under the state residential code the city uses, and we confirm the current rule with Vineyard

The Vineyard challenges

Design mistakes we see in Vineyard

Lawn everywhere by default

Wall-to-wall lawn on a small lot drinks a lot of metered water and leaves little room for anything else. Grass in a narrow park strip is hard to water without soaking the sidewalk. Under Utah law, an HOA cannot require lawn in strips under 8 feet wide, so you have options.

No shade on the patio

New neighborhoods mean young trees, so a back patio can sit in full sun all afternoon. A patio nobody uses in July is money spent for nothing. We plan shade first: a pergola, a shade tree in the right spot, or both.

Rock yards that look bare

Going water-wise does not have to mean a yard of gray rock. Rock with no plants looks hot and empty and throws heat at the house. Localscapes-style beds mix plants, boulders and a small central lawn or turf area so the yard still reads green.

Sprinklers as an afterthought

When the sprinkler design comes last, heads end up spraying fences and patios, and drip lines get buried under pavers. We lay out zones while we design, so lawn, beds and trees each get the water they need, and nothing gets sprayed that should stay dry.

The J&H approach

How we design Vineyard yards

1 How we handle it

Walk the lot together

Jackson walks the yard with you, notes sun and shade, where water sits and what your HOA requires. We ask how you use the yard on a normal Tuesday night, not just for the once-a-year party.

2 How we handle it

One drawing, front to back

We draw the whole yard: hardscape, turf or lawn, beds, trees, lighting, sprinkler zones and drainage. You see where it all goes and what it costs, and you can build it at once or in phases.

3 How we handle it

Built to the plan

The team that drew it builds it, in the right order. Grading and pipes go in first, then hardscape, then plants and finish work. Nothing gets dug up twice, and you are not paying two crews to point at each other.

Vineyard questions

Landscape Design in Vineyard: what people ask

Do I need a design if my Vineyard yard is small?
Small yards need it more. Every square foot matters, and mistakes are easy to spot from the kitchen window. A plan shows how a patio, turf, beds and a fence fit together, so you do not pay to tear out something you added too early.
Can you design a yard that passes my HOA?
Yes. We read your HOA's landscape rules before we draw and build the plan to them. You get a clean drawing and plant list for the submittal, and we adjust it if the board asks for changes.
What are the lawn rules for a new Vineyard yard?
Lawn rules for new yards are tightening across Utah County, and state law limits how much non-water-wise landscaping an HOA can require. Vineyard's own rules can change, so we confirm the current limits with the city and your HOA before we finish the design.
Can I build my Vineyard design in phases?
Yes. We put in the parts that go underground first, like grading, drain lines and sprinkler mains, so later phases plug in without digging up the yard. A common order is the front yard and patio first, then a pergola or turf the next season.

Your dream yard. Done right. Done on time.
