Artificial Turf in Provo

Turf in Provo starts under the grass

Good synthetic turf can look close to real grass from the patio, and it never needs mowing. Bad turf looks fine for one summer, then ripples, smells by the dog run, and holds puddles after every storm. The turf product matters less than most people think. What decides the result in Provo is the base under it and how water leaves it.

On the valley floor, that means clay. Clay barely drains, so rain and pet urine that soak through the turf need a path out, or they sit right under the backing. Up on the bench by Rock Canyon the ground drains better but slopes, and turf on a slope wants to creep downhill unless the edges and seams are locked down.

Most Provo yards water off secondary irrigation, so swapping lawn for turf will not cut your bill as much as it would in a town on culinary water. People here pick turf for other reasons: a shady spot where grass gave up, a dog that wrecks sod, a putting green, or a play area that stays clean. We build all of those.

Provo runs from the Utah Lake flats up to the Rock Canyon bench, so one side of town is heavy clay and the other is gravel, and the yard has to be built for the ground it actually sits on.

The Provo challenges

What makes turf tricky in Provo

Valley clay under the backing

Provo's valley clay drains slowly. Lay turf on a thin layer of rock over that clay and water collects in the low spots under the backing. You get soft, squishy areas, odor in pet zones and seams that lift. The base has to be deep enough and sloped so water moves off before it pools.

July sun on synthetic fibers

Synthetic turf gets hot in direct July sun, much hotter than real grass, and it can be rough on bare feet and paws in the afternoon. Sunlight bouncing off some windows can also scorch the fibers. Placement, shade from a tree or pergola, and the right infill all help, and a quick rinse cools it down.

Pets and odor

Dog areas need more than turf laid flat. Urine soaks through and has to drain and rinse out, or the smell builds by August. That calls for a base that drains fast, an infill made for pet use, and an easy way to hose the area down.

Slopes on bench lots

On sloped Edgemont and Rock Canyon yards, turf can slide and open up at the seams over time, and a heavy storm can wash out the base at the bottom edge. Steep spots may need a small wall or a step instead. We look at the grade before we decide where turf belongs.

The J&H approach

How we install turf in Provo

1 How we handle it

Dig out, base in, pack it down

We remove sod and soft soil, set a weed barrier where it makes sense, and bring in a crushed rock base, compacted in layers with a gentle slope so water runs off. On clay we plan where that water goes before the turf arrives.

2 How we handle it

Turf matched to how you use it

A putting green, a dog run and a play area each need different turf and infill. We match pile height, backing and infill to how you will use the space, and seam the pieces so the lines do not show from the house.

3 How we handle it

Edges, sprinklers and rules sorted first

We cap or reroute old sprinkler lines under the new turf, lock down edges along beds and hardscape, and check the current turf rules with the city and your HOA before we start, so nothing has to come back out.

Provo questions

Artificial Turf in Provo: what people ask

Does turf make sense if I have secondary water?
It can. Your secondary bill may not drop much, but turf fixes problems water cannot, like deep shade, dog damage and steep strips that are hard to mow. Utah law also requires secondary connections to be metered by 2030, so it helps to plan lower-water areas now.
Is artificial turf allowed in my Provo neighborhood?
It depends on where you live and what your HOA says. City rules and HOA covenants on turf can change, so we confirm the current rules with Provo City and your HOA before you commit. If there are limits on how much of a front yard can be turf, we design around them.
Does turf work as run-out around a sport court?
Yes. Turf run-out around a court keeps mud off the playing surface and looks cleaner than rock. We set the turf on its own compacted base and edge it tight to the slab, so it drains away from the court instead of toward it.
How do I keep pet turf from smelling?
Start with a base that drains, then rinse the area with a hose on a regular schedule, more often in July and August. We use infill made for pet areas and can add a hose bib nearby, so rinsing takes a minute instead of turning into a project.
