Artificial Turf in Orem

Why Orem homeowners look at turf

Orem has no secondary irrigation, so every lawn in town runs on treated city water at tiered rates. That makes artificial turf a bigger question here than in the neighboring towns. Swap a hard-to-water strip of grass for turf and that area stops pulling culinary water all summer. For some yards, that alone is the main reason to do it.

It is not the only reason. Turf works well in dog runs that sod cannot survive, under a basketball hoop, beside a backyard court, or as a putting green off the patio. It also fits narrow park strips and side yards where spray heads waste half their water on concrete. And kids can play on it the day after a rainstorm without tracking mud inside.

The ground decides how well it lasts. Orem sits on dense Lake Bonneville clay on the old Provo Bench, and clay holds water. Turf on a poor base over that clay ripples, holds puddles and starts to smell where pets use it. Below, we walk through the local problems first, then how we build turf to handle each one of them.

Orem is the one town around here with no secondary water, so the sprinkler design shows up on your culinary bill in a way it does not for the neighbors.

The Orem challenges

What makes turf tricky in Orem

Dense clay that barely drains

Under Orem turf, the clay is the problem nobody sees. Rain and rinse water soak through the backing and stop at the clay. Without a deep enough base and a slope to carry it off, water pools in low spots, the surface feels spongy, and seams can lift over time.

Hot turf in July

Synthetic turf heats up in strong afternoon sun, more than real grass, and Orem summers bring plenty of that. A west-facing yard with no shade can get too hot for bare feet by late afternoon. Glare bouncing off some windows can even damage the fibers. Where the turf goes, and what shades it, matters.

Dogs and smell

Pet turf in a slow-draining clay yard can start to smell by midsummer if urine has nowhere to go. It needs a fast-draining base, an infill made for pets, and a hose bib close enough that rinsing is easy. Skip those and the turf gets blamed for what is really a base problem.

Rules that can change

Turf rules can depend on where it goes, especially in front yards, and many HOAs have their own covenants. We do not guess on these. Before you buy anything, we confirm the current rules with the City of Orem and your HOA so the plan meets them.

The J&H approach

How we install turf in Orem

1 How we handle it

A base that moves water

We pull the sod and soft soil, lay down a crushed rock base and compact it in layers with a slight fall, so water runs toward a spot that can take it. In heavier clay areas we plan a drain path before the turf goes down.

2 How we handle it

The right turf for the job

Putting greens, pet areas, play spaces and court surrounds each call for a different pile, backing and infill. We match those to how the area gets used, then seam and nail the turf so the lines and edges stay tight.

3 How we handle it

Old sprinklers dealt with

We cap the lawn zones under the new turf and adjust the heads that are left so they water beds, not plastic grass. That is where the culinary water savings actually come from. Edges along beds and patios get locked down so they do not curl.

Orem questions

Artificial Turf in Orem: what people ask

Will turf lower my Orem water bill?
It can, because the lawn it replaces was running on culinary water. How much depends on how much grass you swap and whether the old zones get capped. You may still rinse pet areas or cool the turf on hot days, but that is far less water than a lawn takes.
Is turf allowed in Orem front yards?
Rules on front-yard turf, and on how much of a yard can be turf, can change, and many HOAs set their own. We check the current rules with Orem and your HOA before we design anything, so you are not stuck tearing it out later.
Can you install a putting green?
Yes. A putting green needs a firmer, flatter base than a lawn swap and a shorter turf, with the cups set before the turf goes down. We can add fringe turf around it and tie it into a patio or a court.
Can turf go on a slope?
Gentle slopes are fine with good anchoring and a base packed tight so it does not wash out. On steeper spots, a small wall or a planted bed often works better. We look at your grade first and give you an honest call.
