Sprinkler Repair in Alpine

Alpine water now has a meter on it

For years Alpine yards watered off the old irrigation ditches, and later off a pressurized secondary system that ran without meters. That changed. The city put meters on secondary water and started billing by use in 2023, with tiered rates against an allowance tied to your lot size. A broken head or a leak under the lawn used to just waste water. Now it shows up on the bill.

The rules matter too. Odd addresses water Monday, Wednesday and Friday, even addresses Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, and only between 7 pm and 7 am. No Sunday watering. The allowance swings with the season, bigger in July and August and much smaller in April and October. The system shuts off around mid-October, so every Alpine system needs a blowout before then.

Alpine's own water plan says the town used about 507 gallons per person per day in 2024, more than twice the state average, and points at big lots and outdoor watering. Most of that is not people being careless. It is old systems: heads that mist on high pressure, zones that mix lawn and shrubs, and slopes watered so fast the water runs into the gutter.

Alpine is the big-lot town on the mountain edge under Lone Peak, where engineered walls, metered secondary water, deer on the bench and the memory of the 2012 Quail Fire all shape what a yard can be.

Know your Alpine ground

Elevation
About 5,049 feet
Ground
Mountain-front ground that changes from lot to lot, with the city mapping debris flow, rockfall and touchy soils near the mountain edge
Secondary irrigation
Alpine runs its own pressurized secondary irrigation, metered and billed in tiers, with odd and even watering days, night-only hours and a shutoff around mid-October
Growing season
USDA zone 6b to 7a, last frost often in May, later than down in the valley
Wall permits
In Alpine a retaining wall over about 4 feet needs a permit and a design by a Utah-licensed engineer, and lots above 5,350 feet fall under the city's Sensitive Lands hillside rules

The Alpine challenges

Sprinkler problems we see in Alpine

Runoff on sloped lawns

On a slope, water lands faster than the soil can drink it, and it runs down to the sidewalk. You pay for it on the meter and the top of the hill still browns. Short cycles with a soak in between fix most of it.

Hidden leaks on a metered line

A cracked lateral under the lawn can run every cycle for weeks. The city asks residents to use the EyeOnWater app, which shows use close to real time. A jump in use on a night with no watering is a clue we can trace.

Zones that mix lawn and shrubs

Many older Alpine systems run lawn heads and shrub heads on the same valve. The shrubs drown or the lawn starves. Splitting those zones, and moving shrubs to drip, lets each part of the yard get the water it really needs.

Missed fall blowouts

When secondary water shuts off in October, water left in the lines can freeze and crack pipes, heads and valves. Alpine winters are long and cold up here. A skipped blowout often turns into a long repair list when the water comes back in spring.

The J&H approach

How we fix sprinklers in Alpine

1 How we handle it

Find the leak, then the waste

We run every zone, look for broken heads, low pressure and soggy spots, and check the meter for flow when nothing should be on. Then we fix what is broken before we touch the schedule.

2 How we handle it

Set it for Alpine's schedule

We program the controller for your odd or even days and night hours, and split long run times into short cycles on slopes. Your allowance shrinks in spring and fall, so the schedule should shift with it.

3 How we handle it

Drip where spray does not belong

Shrubs, terraces and narrow strips do better on drip. It puts water at the roots without misting the fence or the street. Alpine is part of the Utah Water Savers landscape program, and we can look at its current terms with you before you start.

Alpine questions

Sprinkler Repair in Alpine: what people ask

What are Alpine's watering days?
Odd addresses water Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Even addresses water Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Watering runs from 7 pm to 7 am, with no Sunday watering, and the city says you do not have to use all three days. Schedules can change, so we check with Alpine City each season.
When does Alpine shut off secondary water?
Around mid-October in most years, and it comes back on around mid-April. The city posts the date each season. Book your blowout before shutoff, so the lines are empty before the first hard freeze hits.
Why is my secondary water bill so high?
Since metering started, use above your lot-size allowance is billed at higher tiers. The usual causes are a hidden leak, misting heads, runoff on slopes, or a schedule set for July that keeps running into fall. We find the cause and fix it.
Can you convert part of my yard to drip?
Yes. Beds, shrubs, terraces and trees are good fits for drip. If you want to apply for a water savings program, some need approval before any work starts, so check first. We can go over the current program rules with you.
