Landscape Design in Payson

Design the yard Payson actually gives you

A good design starts with the ground, not a picture from somewhere else. Payson yards sit at about 4,669 feet with zone 6b to 7a winters, heavy clay on the valley floor and gravelly fan soil up on the bench. The water is very hard and the secondary system carries sediment. A plan that ignores those things looks nice on paper and costs you every summer. We start with what your lot is, then draw what it can be.

Design and build work best with the same people. We have worked on 200+ projects across Utah County, and the costly mistakes we see most come from a plan drawn by one company and built by another. The grade on the drawing does not match the dirt. The patio lands right where the sprinkler main has to run. When our crew builds what we drew, those problems get caught on paper instead of in your backyard.

A Payson plan covers the whole yard: grading and drainage, the patio and paths, walls if the lot slopes, a filtered sprinkler layout, lawn and planting, lights, and shade. We can phase it if you want to build over a few years. Jackson walks the lot with you, listens to how you want to use it, and points out the things a drawing misses, like where snowmelt pools in March or where the deer cut through.

Payson has two quirks an outside crew misses: very hard culinary water, around 11.7 grains a gallon, that scales up sprinkler heads, and a secondary system that carries canyon sediment, so filtration matters here.

The Payson challenges

Where Payson yard plans go wrong

Plants that fail on hard water

Many plants sold at the big box stores do poorly with Payson's very hard water and alkaline soil. Leaves yellow, roots stall, and you are replacing them in two years. A plant list built for this end of the valley holds up and costs less over the life of the yard.

Two soils on one side of town

Payson can go from clay on the flats to gravelly bench soil in a few blocks. A design that calls for the same base, plants and watering on both will fail on one of them. The soil under your lot should shape the plan, not a template.

Plans that skip the water system

Lots of designs show a lush lawn and full beds and leave the sprinklers to the installer. In Payson, where sediment clogs heads and hard water scales them, the system needs filters, the right parts and smart zones from the start. That belongs in the drawing.

Views versus privacy on the bench

East bench lots look out over the valley, and the neighbors can look in. A design has to choose where to open up and where to screen. Get it wrong and you end up with a tall fence blocking the view you bought the lot for, or a patio the whole street can see.

The J&H approach

How a J&H design comes together

1 How we handle it

Lot walk and soil check

We start on your lot. We look at the slope, dig a test hole to see the soil, check where water runs, and note the sun and the view. Then we talk through how you live outside: kids, dogs, cooking, or a quiet spot to sit.

2 How we handle it

One drawing for the whole yard

You get a full plan with grading, hardscape, walls, sprinklers, planting and lighting, plus a written number. If the budget calls for phases, we mark what gets built first so the later phases do not tear out the early work.

3 How we handle it

The same crew builds it

The people who drew the plan build it. Jackson stays on the job, and if the ground surprises us, like a buried cobble layer on the bench, we adjust the plan right there instead of passing it back to a designer in an office.

Payson questions

Landscape Design in Payson: what people ask

How long does a landscape design take?
It depends on the size of the yard and how many rounds of changes you want. A flat lot on the Peteetneet side moves faster than a bench lot that needs walls and an engineer. We give you a timeline after the first lot walk, once we know what we are working with.
Can I build my design in phases?
Yes, and plenty of Payson homeowners do. We usually start with grading, drainage, walls and the sprinkler main, since those are the hardest to add later. Patios, planting and extras like a fire pit can follow the next year without ripping anything out.
Do you pick plants that work with Payson's water?
Yes. We choose plants that handle alkaline soil, cold winters and the hard water here, and we plan the drip and spray zones to match. Where deer come through near the canyon, we lean on plants they tend to leave alone.
What if I already have a design from someone else?
We can work from it. Often we keep the ideas you like and adjust the parts that do not fit your soil, slope or water. A plan drawn without a Payson lot walk usually needs some changes to the grades and the sprinkler layout before it can be built.
