Artificial Turf in Cedar Hills

Turf on a bench lot

Artificial turf is a fair answer for parts of a Cedar Hills yard. A shady strip where grass will not grow, a dog run, a play area that gets beat up or a putting green next to the court all make sense. With secondary water now billed by use, turf also takes those spots off the meter. It is not the right call for every square foot, and we will tell you where it is not.

The base decides how turf performs. On a sloped bench lot, the base has to be compacted, shaped to drain and held in place so it does not creep downhill. Pet areas need liquid to move through the turf and out of the base fast. Turf also gets hot in full summer sun, so where you put it matters as much as how it goes in.

Check the rules first. The Utah Water Savers landscape incentive, which Cedar Hills is eligible for, does not pay for artificial turf, so if you want that incentive, plan for live plants and drip instead. Your HOA, if you have one, may have its own turf rules. We confirm current rules with the city and your HOA before we price the job.

Cedar Hills calls itself Utah's mile-high city, a family town on the bench at the mouth of American Fork Canyon where even a short retaining wall needs a permit, the secondary water is metered, and hillside lots in The Cedars and Canyon Heights follow their own grading rules.

Know your Cedar Hills ground

Elevation
About 4,900 to 5,300 feet, depending on the lot
Ground
An old Lake Bonneville shoreline bench and alluvial fan, so the ground can change from one lot to the next
Secondary irrigation
Cedar Hills runs its own pressurized irrigation, usually April 15 to October 15, and since July 1, 2025 bills it by actual use
Growing season
USDA zone 7a, last frost late April
Wall permits
In Cedar Hills fences and retaining walls need an installation permit, even walls under 48 inches, walls over 4 feet need a professional engineer's stamp, and H-1 hillside slopes of 30 percent or more stay natural

The Cedar Hills challenges

Turf problems we see in Cedar Hills

Base that shifts on a slope

Turf laid over loose dirt on a slope creeps, wrinkles and develops soft spots. Rain and snowmelt wash the fines out from under it. On bench lots the base needs real compaction, a solid edge and sometimes a short wall at the low side.

Pet areas that smell

If urine cannot drain through the base, it stays, and by July you can smell it. A pet area needs a base that drains, a turf backing that lets liquid through and a way to rinse it. Skip those and the dog run becomes the worst corner of the yard.

Hot turf in full sun

Turf on a south or west-facing slope in midsummer can get too hot for bare feet. Shade from a tree or a pergola, a lighter infill and a quick rinse before play all help. We look at where the sun sits before we pick the spot.

Counting on a rebate for turf

Some people pull their lawn for turf expecting a water rebate. The Utah Water Savers incentive does not cover artificial turf. If the incentive matters to you, we can plan a mix: turf where it earns its keep and live, drip-watered plants elsewhere.

The J&H approach

How we install turf in Cedar Hills

1 How we handle it

Dig out and build the base

We remove the old sod and soft soil, lay down a compacted rock base and shape it to drain. On slopes we add edge restraint and step the base where needed so the turf stays put through freeze and thaw.

2 How we handle it

Pick turf for the job

A dog run, a putting green and a play lawn each need different turf. We show you samples and explain pile height, backing and infill, so you are choosing for how the area really gets used.

3 How we handle it

Seams and edges done right

Seams get glued and hidden, edges get tucked and secured, and infill goes in evenly. Around courts and patios, the turf meets the hard edge cleanly, so nothing curls up or catches a toe when the kids run across it.

Cedar Hills questions

Artificial Turf in Cedar Hills: what people ask

Is artificial turf allowed in Cedar Hills?
Rules can come from the city and from your HOA, if you have one, and both can change. We confirm current rules for your lot with the city and your HOA before we price the job, so you do not end up pulling turf out after it goes in.
Will turf qualify for a water rebate?
No. The Utah Water Savers landscape incentive does not pay for artificial turf, hardscape, pavers or rubber mulch. If you want the incentive, the project needs live, water-wise plants on drip, and approval before work starts. We can design a yard that mixes both.
Can you put a putting green in my Cedar Hills yard?
Yes. A green needs a firmer, flatter base than a turf lawn so the ball rolls true, and any breaks get shaped into the base before the turf goes down. A gentle terrace on a bench lot can be a good spot for one.
Is turf good for dogs?
It can be. The keys are a base that drains fast, a backing that lets liquid through and a hose nearby. Busy dog runs do well on turf. If your dog digs, edge the area well so the turf cannot be pulled up at the sides.

Your dream yard. Done right. Done on time.
