New-Construction Landscaping in Mapleton

Finishing a new Mapleton lot from bare dirt

A new home in Mapleton usually comes with a big, bare lot. After the build, the ground is a mix of packed subsoil, gravel and cobble from the east bench, and whatever came out of the foundation hole. Trucks and equipment have driven over all of it. Nothing grows well on that as it sits, and the bigger the lot, the more of it there is to fix.

We start with the ground. We pick out rock and construction debris, rip the packed soil, fix the builder's rough grade so water moves away from the house, and bring in screened topsoil where lawn and beds go. On a sloped lot under Maple Mountain, we build walls or terraces before planting, and we keep off any steep ground protected under Mapleton's CE-1 zone.

Then it comes down to timing. Mapleton's pressurized irrigation usually runs mid-April to mid-October, so sod and planting go in while the water is on, and a new yard needs time to root before winter. The deer will find new shrubs that first winter. If your subdivision has an HOA with a front-yard deadline, we plan the schedule backward from that date.

Mapleton is big-lot country under Maple Mountain, a lot of it horse property, where the bench slopes on gravel fan soil and the deer come down out of the foothills in winter.

The Mapleton challenges

What new Mapleton lots come with

Cobbles and builder debris

New lots on the Mapleton bench are full of round rock, plus concrete washout, wire and scrap from the build. Lay sod over that and you get bumps, dry spots and dinged mower blades. We rake and pick the lot clean before any topsoil goes down.

Packed ground on a big lot

Heavy equipment compacts the subsoil hard, and on a big Mapleton lot that is a lot of packed ground. Roots stop at the hard layer and water runs off it. We rip the subsoil first, then spread and blend topsoil so it all works as one layer.

A new yard the deer will find

Brand-new shrubs and trees are exactly what mule deer browse when they come down off the foothills in winter. One bad winter can wipe out a new planting. We lean on deer-resistant plants, protect young trees, and fence the beds that need it.

Sprinklers sized for the lot

A new build is the one time you can design irrigation for the whole property from scratch. Get it wrong and the far corners stay dry for years. We size mainlines for the distance and zone the yard by area, so every part gets even water.

The J&H approach

How we finish a new Mapleton build

1 How we handle it

Plan front, back and beyond

We plan the whole lot, even if you only finish the front this year. Sprinkler mains, drains, walls and future patios get placed so later phases plug right in without tearing up what is already done.

2 How we handle it

Build the ground under it

Rock picking, debris removal, ripping, grading and topsoil come before anything green. On slopes we terrace or wall the buildable ground. This is the work that decides whether a new yard thrives or limps along.

3 How we handle it

Finish on the water season

Sprinklers go in first, then sod and planting while Mapleton's water is running. We aim to have new plants rooted before the mid-October shutoff, and we hand you a watering schedule for the first season.

Mapleton questions

New-Construction Landscaping in Mapleton: what people ask

Do I need topsoil on my new Mapleton lot?
For lawn and beds, almost always. Builder dirt on the bench is gravel, cobble and packed subsoil that holds very little water. Screened topsoil blended into loosened ground gives new sod and plants a real chance. Native areas can often skip it.
Can you meet my HOA landscaping deadline?
If you call us early, usually yes. We build the front yard first, with grade, sprinklers, topsoil and sod or planting, and leave the rest of the lot for a later phase if needed. Tell us the date and we schedule backward from it.
When should I landscape a new build in Mapleton?
Hardscape, walls and grading can go in most of the year. Sod and planting go in while the pressurized water is on, roughly mid-April to mid-October, and tender plants wait until after the late-April frost. Fall planting needs to go in early enough to root before winter.

Your dream yard. Done right. Done on time.
