Fencing, Decks and Pergolas in Spanish Fork

Shade and privacy that can stand the Spanish Fork wind

Anything that stands up in a Spanish Fork yard has to take the wind. The night air pours out of Spanish Fork Canyon and leans on everything in its path from the same side. A solid vinyl privacy fence catches all of it. So does a pergola with a solid roof, or a shade sail stretched tight. You can see the results around town in fences that lean the same way and sails torn at the corners.

The ground adds to it. Lake Bonneville silt and river alluvium do not grip a post the way firm ground does, and silt that freezes can jack a post up an inch over a few winters. A fence post set 18 inches deep in a dry hole might hold in a calm valley town. Here it is usually the first thing to fail.

We build Spanish Fork fences, decks and pergolas with deeper footings, heavier posts on the windward runs, and hardware rated for the load. We also handle the city side. Spanish Fork requires a permit for any fence over 3 feet, and we confirm current rules for decks and covered structures before we build. Jackson can show you fence styles that block the view but let some air through.

Spanish Fork has the biggest canyon airshed on the Wasatch Front, and the nightly downslope wind is the single thing an outside crew gets wrong here: it dries lawns and blows sprinkler spray right off target.

The Spanish Fork challenges

Why fences and shade fail in Spanish Fork

Privacy fences that become sails

A solid 6-foot fence is a wall to the wind. On the canyon side of town, that load hits from the same direction night after night. Posts set shallow or spaced too far apart start to lean, panels rack, and the gate stops latching. It did not fail all at once. It got pushed a little every night.

Posts in soft, frost-prone ground

Silt holds water, and water expands when it freezes. A post set in a short concrete plug can get lifted as frost grabs the sides. Near the Spanish Fork River the ground can also be soft enough that a post sinks or tips with just a little wind load on it.

Shade that the wind tears up

Shade sails and fabric covers go up easy and come down hard here. The downslope wind loads them all night, and the fabric and corner hardware take a beating. Solid pergola roofs have the opposite problem: they catch a lot of wind and need beefy posts and footings to stay put.

Fence height and permits

Spanish Fork requires a permit for any fence over 3 feet, and residential fences top out at 6 feet in most cases. Decks and roofed pergolas can need a building permit too. We confirm current requirements with the city on every job so nothing has to come back down.

The J&H approach

How we build fences, decks and pergolas in Spanish Fork

1 How we handle it

Footings below the frost

We dig post holes and deck footings below the frost depth the city's code calls for, flare the bottoms where the soil is soft, and use enough concrete to hold the post against both wind and frost. On windward runs we tighten up the post spacing.

2 How we handle it

Fence styles that breathe

Semi-private styles, like horizontal slats with a small gap or a solid lower panel with a lattice top, cut the wind load while still blocking views. If you want solid vinyl on the canyon side, we upgrade the posts and add steel inserts where they help.

3 How we handle it

Pergolas built to stay put

Our pergolas sit on poured footings with heavy brackets, not on top of pavers. We can add a louvered roof that opens to let the wind through, or slats for filtered shade. If you want a sail, we anchor it to steel posts and plan on taking it down for winter.

Spanish Fork questions

Fencing, Decks and Pergolas in Spanish Fork: what people ask

Do I need a permit for a fence in Spanish Fork?
Yes, if the fence is over 3 feet tall. Spanish Fork requires a permit for those, and most residential fences are capped at 6 feet. Rules do change, so we confirm current requirements with the city for your lot and handle the permit for you before any posts go in.
Will a vinyl fence hold up to the canyon wind?
It can, if the posts are set deep, spaced right and reinforced on the windiest runs. Most leaning vinyl fences we look at in Spanish Fork come down to short posts and wide spacing, not the vinyl itself. If your lot takes the wind head on, we may suggest a style with a small gap.
Wood or composite for a deck in Spanish Fork?
Our dry summers, hard sun and freeze-thaw winters are tough on softwood. Composite holds up well and skips the yearly staining. If you want real wood, we frame it with good airflow under the deck and plan on sealing the boards every year or two.
Can a pergola block the evening wind?
A pergola on its own will not stop wind, but a pergola with a privacy wall or screen on the canyon side can make a calm corner. We place it so the house or a wall takes the first hit and the seating sits in the lee, where you can actually enjoy dinner outside.
