Backyard Rebuild in Mapleton

Starting over on a Mapleton yard

Some Mapleton yards are tired in ways a weekend cannot fix. The sprinklers were added onto for years and never cover right. A patio has sunk at one corner. A wall leans. Part of the lot was pasture once and is now packed dirt and weeds. On a property this size, fixing it one piece at a time never ends. A rebuild clears it and starts from the ground up.

The ground tells you why things failed. On the east bench the soil is gravel and cobble off Maple Mountain, and a patio or wall built on uneven rock without proper compaction settles in spots. Ground grazed by animals for years gets packed hard and stops taking water. And on a slope, water from the uphill side keeps running through the yard until someone gives it a path.

We tear out what failed, pick the rock, rip the packed ground, and set a new grade with drainage. Walls get rebuilt with drain rock and pipe. Then comes a new sprinkler system zoned for the size of the lot, new hardscape on a proper base, topsoil, lawn and planting that can stand up to the deer. One crew runs it from tear-out to the last plant.

Mapleton is big-lot country under Maple Mountain, a lot of it horse property, where the bench slopes on gravel fan soil and the deer come down out of the foothills in winter.

The Mapleton challenges

Why Mapleton yards wear out

Old pasture packed like a road

Ground that held horses or other animals for years gets compacted hard. Sod laid on top roots shallow and burns out in July. We rip the ground deep, pick out the rock, and blend in topsoil so the new lawn can root down.

Patched sprinklers across an acre

Many big Mapleton systems grew zone by zone, with mixed heads and old pipe. Pressure is weak at the far end and nothing covers evenly. A rebuild is the time to start over with a layout sized for the property and the mid-April to mid-October water season.

Walls and patios on uneven rock

On the bench, a base laid over cobbles without picking them out compacts unevenly, and patios crack or drop at one corner. Walls built without drain rock lean after a few freezes. We take them down to firm ground and rebuild them properly.

Slope you cannot regrade

Some Mapleton lots run into steep ground protected under the city's CE-1 zone at 30 percent or more. A rebuild cannot bulldoze that slope flat. We rework the buildable part of the lot and hold the steep ground with deep-rooted planting instead.

The J&H approach

How we rebuild a Mapleton yard

1 How we handle it

Diagnose the whole property

Before anything gets torn out, we walk the lot, test sprinkler pressure, check walls, look at where water goes, and dig a few holes. You get a plain list of what failed, why it failed, and what it costs to fix.

2 How we handle it

Clear, rip and regrade

Old turf, failing hardscape, dead plants and broken pipe come out. We pick rock, rip the packed ground, and set a new grade with swales and drains that send water away from the house and outbuildings.

3 How we handle it

Rebuild in the right order

Walls and drainage first, then sprinkler mains and zones, then hardscape on a proper base, then topsoil, sod and planting. Each layer goes on top of a finished one, so the yard stays put for the long haul.

Mapleton questions

Backyard Rebuild in Mapleton: what people ask

Can you turn an old pasture into a backyard?
Yes. We clear weeds and rock, rip the compacted ground, fix the grade, and add topsoil where lawn and beds go. Areas you do not need as yard can be seeded with native, low-water cover, which keeps the cost of a big Mapleton lot down.
Is it better to rebuild or repair my yard?
If one thing is broken, repair it. If the sprinklers, patio, walls and lawn are all failing, they usually share a cause, often grade, drainage or a poor base. Fixing all of it at once costs less than fixing each piece twice.
What can you save in a rebuild?
Healthy mature trees, solid fencing and sound outbuildings usually stay. We check old patios and walls to see if they can be reused. On Mapleton lots, good boulders we dig up often go right back into the new walls and beds.
