Pickleball and Sports Courts in Springville

Finding flat court ground in Springville

A pickleball court needs a flat pad about 30 by 60 feet once you add room to run. On the west side of Springville, finding flat ground is easy. Keeping it flat is the job, because lakebed clay swells with water and heaves with frost, and a court shows every bump. A crack running across the kitchen line is usually the first sign the base was too thin.

Up on the east bench it is the reverse. The soil is gravelly and drains well, but the lots slope. A court there needs a cut into the hill, a fill on the low side or both, usually with a retaining wall. Springville requires a permit and engineering for walls over 4 feet with the footing, and bench lots may also sit in the Hillside Overlay.

We build Springville courts to match the lot. On clay we dig deep, compact a road-base section and pour a reinforced slab with a slight slope to shed water. On the bench we grade the pad, build the walls and handle the city permits. Fencing, lights, a putting green or a basketball hoop can all go in on the same job, built by the same crew.

Springville, Art City, spreads from about 4,400 feet by Utah Lake up past 5,600 feet on the east bench, so a west-side clay yard and a bench view-lot are different soil, drainage and frost worlds, and one quote does not fit both.

Know your Springville ground

Elevation
About 4,551 feet
Ground
Heavy Lake Bonneville lakebed clay on the valley floor, gravelly cobble-filled fan soil up on the east bench, and Hobble Creek bottoms with a high water table
Secondary irrigation
Springville runs its own city pressurized irrigation, on around April 15 and off around October 15, and the high line pressure means most systems need a filter and a pressure reducer
Growing season
USDA zone 6b to 7a, last frost early-to-mid May on the bench
Wall permits
In Springville a retaining wall over 4 feet, footing included, needs a permit and engineering, and east-bench lots can fall in the Hillside Overlay with added grading rules
Where we work

The Springville challenges

What makes a Springville court tricky

Clay heave under a big slab

West-side clay and creek-bottom ground move. Over a few winters, a court slab on a thin base can lift at one corner and crack across the middle. Acrylic court coatings show every one of those cracks, and filling them only holds for so long.

Cutting a pad into the bench

A full court on a sloped bench lot can mean a big cut on the uphill side and fill on the downhill side. Fill that is not compacted in lifts settles, and the court tips. The wall that holds the cut has to drain, and past 4 feet it needs engineering.

Fence plans and fence height

Springville wants fence plans submitted to Community Development, with a site plan, before construction starts. Players want tall fencing, but tall fences have rules. We work through height and placement with the city before anything is ordered, so you are not stuck with a fence that has to come down.

Court lights next to neighbors

Many Springville streets are close-set, and court lights that spill into bedroom windows cause trouble fast. On the bench, lights can also shine down onto the homes below you. Fixtures need to be aimed and shielded to light the court, not the whole street.

The J&H approach

How we build courts in Springville

1 How we handle it

Match the base to the ground

On clay we over-dig, add fabric and compact deep road base before we pour. On the bench we pull cobble out of the pad area and fill the holes with compacted base. Either way the slab gets rebar, planned joints and a slight cross slope.

2 How we handle it

Grade and wall the bench pad

We set the court pad with a laser, compact fill in thin lifts, and build drained retaining walls on the cut and fill sides. Any wall taller than 4 feet, footing included, gets an engineer's plan and a Springville permit.

3 How we handle it

Fence and light for the street

We plan fence height with the city, set posts deep in concrete, and use shielded LED fixtures aimed down at the court. That keeps the light on the lines and off the neighbors below or beside you, which keeps everybody friendly.

Springville questions

Pickleball and Sports Courts in Springville: what people ask

Can I fit a pickleball court on a sloped bench lot?
Often, yes. We cut a flat pad into the slope and hold it with retaining walls. On steeper Springville lots, a half court or a combined court and putting green may fit better. We check slope, walls and permits on your lot before you commit to anything.
What surface works for a backyard court?
A reinforced concrete slab with an acrylic court coating is the common choice. It plays well and lasts if the base is right. Modular tile over concrete is another option and is a little easier on knees. On Springville clay, the base matters more than whatever goes on top.
Can you add a putting green?
Yes. We set putting greens on a separate compacted base and use a true putting turf, shaped with a little break so they play like the real thing. On bench lots, a green can use a terrace that is too small for a court, which puts that leftover flat spot to work.

Your dream yard. Done right. Done on time.
