Grading and Retaining Walls in Spanish Fork

Getting water off a flat Spanish Fork lot

Most Spanish Fork yards are not steep. The trouble is the opposite. A lot of town is close to flat, so water has nowhere obvious to go. Rain and snowmelt sit against the foundation, run under the patio, or pond in the middle of the lawn. On Lake Bonneville silt that water does not soak in fast, and it can hang around for days after a storm.

Where there is real grade, it tends to be up toward the canyon mouth or on lots that step down toward the Spanish Fork River. Those are the yards that need retaining walls, and walls on silt need a good footing with drain rock behind them. Without that, the wet soil pushes the wall forward a little each spring until you can see the lean from the street.

We start every Spanish Fork grading job with a level and a plan for where the water goes, not with a skid steer. We set the slope away from the house, cut swales where the yard needs them, and add drains where the ground will not move water on its own. Walls get a compacted base, a drain pipe and gravel backfill, and taller ones get an engineer.

Spanish Fork has the biggest canyon airshed on the Wasatch Front, and the nightly downslope wind is the single thing an outside crew gets wrong here: it dries lawns and blows sprinkler spray right off target.

The Spanish Fork challenges

Grading and wall problems we see in Spanish Fork

Flat lots with nowhere to drain

A yard that looks flat still needs fall. On many Spanish Fork lots the builder left it dead level or even tipped back toward the house. Water then soaks along the foundation and freezes against it. You may see it as a wet window well, a damp basement corner, or a strip of ice on the back walk.

Silt that pushes walls over

Wet silt is heavy, and it gets heavier when it freezes. A block wall built without drain rock behind it has that full wet load leaning on it all winter. Each freeze-thaw cycle nudges it. Within a few years the top course is out of line and the cap stones start to pop loose.

River-bottom layers that change fast

Ground near the Spanish Fork River is alluvium, layers of silt, sand and gravel laid down by the water. It can be soft in one corner and firm in the next. A wall footing that crosses a soft layer settles unevenly, so these lots take more probing with a shovel before we set a line.

Wall rules set by the city

Spanish Fork puts retaining walls under its adopted building code, and taller walls bring engineering and inspections. If you want a fence on top of the wall, the fence has its own rule: over 3 feet needs a permit. Getting either one wrong after the fact can mean tearing it out.

The J&H approach

How we grade and build walls in Spanish Fork

1 How we handle it

Shoot grades before we dig

We set a laser level and mark where every part of the yard sits, so we know how much fall we have to work with. Then we draw where the water goes: away from the house, across the lawn, and out to a swale, a dry creek bed or a drain.

2 How we handle it

Build walls that drain

Every wall we build in Spanish Fork gets a compacted footing, a perforated drain pipe at the base, and clean gravel behind the block. The gravel lets water out so the silt cannot push. On taller walls we add geogrid back into the soil and follow the engineer's plan.

3 How we handle it

Sort out permits early

We call Spanish Fork Community Development before we price a wall that is getting tall, so the quote already includes any engineering and inspections. You are not hit with a surprise halfway through the job. We keep the permit paperwork in your job file.

Spanish Fork questions

Grading and Retaining Walls in Spanish Fork: what people ask

My yard is flat. Why does water pool by my house?
Flat is the problem. Water needs the ground to drop away from the foundation, and many Spanish Fork lots were left level or even tipped back toward the house. Silt also soaks water up slowly, so it sits. We regrade so the soil falls away from the walls and add drains in the spots where it still will not move.
When does a retaining wall need a permit in Spanish Fork?
Spanish Fork applies its adopted building code to retaining walls, and the height where a permit and engineering kick in can change when the code is updated. We confirm the current number with Spanish Fork Community Development for your wall before we quote it, so the price is real.
What kind of wall holds up on silt?
Segmental block on a good gravel base, with drain pipe and gravel backfill, holds up well because it drains and can flex a little. Boulder walls work too on smaller grade changes. Railroad ties and timber rot and lean here, so we usually pull those out when we rebuild.
Can you fix a wall that is already leaning?
Sometimes. If only the top courses moved, we can pull them, add drainage behind, and reset. If the whole wall is rolling forward, the base or the drainage failed, and the honest fix is to rebuild it right. Jackson will tell you which one it is after a look on site.
