Artificial Turf in Payson

Artificial turf that lasts in Payson

Turf looks like the easy button. No mowing, no watering, green in August. In Payson it can be that, but only if the ground under it is built right. Turf is a carpet that lets water through, so whatever sits under it has to carry that water away. On the clay flats by Peteetneet Creek, the native soil barely drains, and rain or pet urine that soaks through can sit under the turf for days.

The east bench is a different job. Gravelly fan soil drains well, but the dig turns up cobbles that have to come out before a smooth base goes in. Bench lots also slope, and turf on a slope needs a firmer base and more fastening at the edges so it does not creep downhill. Freeze and thaw from fall into late April works on any base that holds water, which is one more reason to get the base right.

We install turf for lawn swaps, side yards, dog runs, play areas, putting greens and the strips around backyard courts. Every job starts with the base, then the turf, seams and infill go in. Rules on turf can come from the city or from your HOA, so we check the current rules with Payson City and your HOA before you choose a product or pull out any grass.

Payson has two quirks an outside crew misses: very hard culinary water, around 11.7 grains a gallon, that scales up sprinkler heads, and a secondary system that carries canyon sediment, so filtration matters here.

The Payson challenges

What turf runs into in Payson

Clay that will not drain

Turf drains through small holes in its backing, but that water still needs somewhere to go. Payson's lakebed clay takes it in slowly. Without a deeper, open rock base, and in some yards a drain, water ponds under the turf, the base goes soft and dog areas start to smell by midsummer.

Hot turf in July sun

Synthetic turf in full sun gets a lot hotter than real grass on a summer afternoon, and bare feet and dog paws notice right away. Shade from a tree, a pergola or the house helps a lot, and so does the right infill. We look at where the afternoon sun lands before we pick the spot for a play area.

Slopes on the east bench

Turf on a sloped bench lot wants to slide, and loose infill washes down in a hard rain. The base has to be compacted firm, and the edges need more fastening than a flat yard. Very steep spots often work better as rock, plants or a short wall with flat turf above it.

Hard water and canyon grit

If the sprinklers for nearby beds throw onto the turf, Payson's hard water can leave a chalky film on the blades, and secondary water drops fine grit into the infill. Both make the turf look tired early. We switch the beds around turf to drip and cap or move the heads that would hit it.

The J&H approach

How we install turf in Payson

1 How we handle it

A base for your soil

We dig out the sod and soft soil, then build a compacted base of crushed rock. On clay we go deeper and add a drain where water has nowhere else to go. On the bench we pull the cobbles first so the finished surface stays smooth.

2 How we handle it

Turf picked for the use

A dog run, a putting green and a front lawn swap each want a different product. We match the blade, backing and infill to how you use the space, including pet-friendly infill and a simple rinse routine for dog areas.

3 How we handle it

Seams, edges and the old sprinklers

Seams get glued and hidden, and edges get fastened tight so kids, dogs and wind do not lift them. We cap or move the old heads, keep your trees on their own water, and leave the yard ready for the next storm.

Payson questions

Artificial Turf in Payson: what people ask

Does artificial turf work for dogs in Payson?
Yes, if the base drains. Pet urine has to pass through the turf and the rock and then leave the area, which is harder on clay. We build pet areas with a more open base, pet-friendly infill and, where it is needed, a drain. A rinse with the hose now and then keeps it fresh.
Will turf get too hot for kids?
On a hot July afternoon in full sun, it can get uncomfortable for bare feet. Most families play on it in the morning and evening, or put the play area where shade falls in the afternoon. Some infill types run cooler than others, and we can walk you through them.
Are there city or HOA rules on turf in Payson?
We will not guess about this. Payson City and HOAs can both have a say about front yards and park strips, and the details change over time. We confirm the current rules with the city and your HOA before you order turf, so nothing has to come back out.
How long does artificial turf last?
It depends on the product, the sun and how hard the area gets used. A dog run or a play area wears faster than a front lawn. On a cheap job the base is usually what fails first, so a good base is how you get the full life out of the turf.
