Landscaping in Saratoga Springs

A young city with a lot of yard rules

Saratoga Springs grew fast, and most of it is new homes along the northwest shore of Utah Lake. That means most yards here started as bare dirt, and the city put a clock on them. On lots a third of an acre or smaller, the front yard is due within a year of move-in and the back within two. Plenty of streets also have an HOA with its own date.

The yard runs on its own water, too. The city's pressurized irrigation line charges the week of April 15, drains the week of October 15 and is fully metered, with a higher rate once you pass your lot's allotment. Add the front yard planting rule, the park strip list, the turf specs and the hillside wall rules, and a Saratoga yard has more paperwork behind it than people expect.

We build for all of it: bare lots on a deadline, grown-in yards ready for a remodel, slopes that need walls and low spots that need drainage. Jackson walks the lot first and gives you an honest number in writing.

Saratoga Springs sits at an elevation of about 4,547 feet on the northwest shore of Utah Lake below Lake Mountain, runs a fully metered city pressurized irrigation system from mid-April to mid-October, and requires new-home front yards landscaped within 1 year under Land Development Code 19.06.08.

What Saratoga Springs yards deal with

The local problems, and how we handle them

Bare lots on a city deadline

Saratoga Springs wants front and street-side yards landscaped within 1 year and the rest within 2 on smaller lots. We plan the whole yard, build the front first and leave the back ready to plug in.

Metered water, tiered rates

Every gallon on the pressurized line is metered, and the rate climbs past your lot's allotment. We size lawns and zones to your number on the city's Irrigation Calculator and keep schedules out of the 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. window.

Storm water and slopes

The city ties most yard flooding to poor grading near homes and hillside runoff. We grade 5 percent away from the house, carry runoff to a safe spot and build walls to the permit and hillside rules.

Landscape, fence and wall rules come from the Saratoga Springs Land Development Code (19.06 landscaping and fencing, 19.10 hillside development). We confirm current requirements with the city and your HOA on every job.

Planting that lasts here

Planting for zone 7a and alkaline ground

Saratoga Springs sits at about 4,547 feet in USDA zone 7a on the 2023 map, and the last spring frost usually lands in early May. Utah soil is loaded with lime, so plants that want acid soil yellow out. We pick plants that like high-pH ground and hold the tender ones until frost is past.

On a new lot, the dirt left after the basement dig is packed subsoil. We loosen it and spread screened topsoil before sod, and we time new grass for when the irrigation line is up to pressure. The city lets new sod get midday water while it roots, which helps a lot in July.

"Jackson and his crew did a phenomenal job on our back yard. I had a vision and they brought it to life. We had them do a retaining wall, grading, underground trampoline, sprinkler system, and sod. They met deadlines, communication was on point, and the whole crew was friendly.…"

Saratoga Springs questions

What Saratoga Springs homeowners ask us

When does my Saratoga Springs yard have to be landscaped?
On lots a third of an acre or smaller, city code gives you 1 year after occupancy or ownership for the front and street-side yards and 2 years for the side and back. Larger lots must landscape at least a third of an acre, front yard included. Your HOA may set its own date.
Does Saratoga Springs limit how much lawn I can have?
The city code does not set a lawn percentage cap. It does require at least 25 percent of front yard landscaping to be planted rather than rock or hardscape, and it sets park strip rules. In practice, your water allotment is the limit to watch, since rates rise past it.
Do I need a permit for a retaining wall in Saratoga Springs?
Yes, once it is 4 feet or taller of unbalanced fill or holds a surcharge load. Slopes of 15 percent or more fall under the hillside chapter, where a single wall maxes out at 10 feet and bigger grade changes step into walls no higher than 6 feet. We confirm current rules with the city.
When does secondary water turn on in Saratoga Springs?
The city charges pressurized irrigation the week of April 15 and drains it the week of October 15. Allow about two weeks after start-up for full pressure. In fall, leave your home valve open so the lines can drain, and close it after November 1.
