Artificial Turf in Vineyard

Turf that drains on flat ground

Turf makes a lot of sense in Vineyard. Most homes water the lawn with metered city drinking water, and a small backyard lawn that gets worn down by kids and dogs rarely looks good by August. Swapping some or all of that grass for turf gives you a green play area that does not run up the water bill all summer.

The catch is the ground under it. Turf is only as good as its base. Vineyard is flat, the soil near Utah Lake is fine silt and clay that drains slowly, and groundwater can run high. Lay turf on a thin base over that and rain, sprinkler overspray and pet urine sit underneath. It smells, the base goes soft and dips show up.

We dig out for a real base, put down packed rock that lets water pass through and give that water a way out. Then we pick turf and infill for how you will use it: pets, kids, putting or play around a court. Edges get locked down so the next valley wind storm does not lift a seam or curl a corner by the fence.

Vineyard is the young town on the lake: flat, newer lots on silty ground by Utah Lake, mostly watered with metered city water, where the job is making a smaller yard work hard.

The Vineyard challenges

Turf problems on Vineyard lots

Water trapped under the turf

Silty lake soil does not soak water away quickly. Without a free-draining base and a planned outlet, water sits under the turf after storms and every time the dog goes out. That leads to odor and a soft, uneven surface.

Heat on open new lots

Young neighborhoods have little shade, and turf gets hot in full July sun. Lighter infill, a cooler turf product and shade from a pergola or tree all help. We look at where the sun hits before you pick a product.

Pet areas that smell

Dog runs need turf with backing that drains fast, an infill that fights odor and a base that rinses clean. On slow-draining ground like this, we add extra drainage under pet areas and slope the base toward an outlet, so a quick rinse carries the mess away.

Edges near sprinklers and beds

Spray heads left next to turf soak it for no reason and can wash out the base. We cap or move heads, switch nearby beds to drip and set a firm edge where turf meets rock or plants, so the base stays put.

The J&H approach

How we install turf in Vineyard

1 How we handle it

A base with a way out

We dig out, lay fabric where needed, then build a crushed rock base packed in layers. The base is graded so water flows to an outlet instead of pooling under the turf. On the wettest lots, we may run a drain pipe through the base too.

2 How we handle it

The right turf and infill

Pet areas, play lawns, putting greens and court surrounds all call for different products. We show you samples and explain the trade-offs in feel, heat and cost. A putting green needs short, tight turf, while a play lawn needs a softer, thicker pile.

3 How we handle it

Tight seams, secured edges

We seam carefully, pin edges into a solid border and adjust the sprinklers around the new turf. Turf around a court or patio is cut to fit so there is no lip to trip on.

Vineyard questions

Artificial Turf in Vineyard: what people ask

Is artificial turf allowed in my Vineyard neighborhood?
Usually, but check first. Many HOAs have rules on turf type, color or where it can go, and Utah law limits what an HOA can require for water-wise yards. We confirm the current rules with the city and your HOA before you order.
Will turf lower my Vineyard water bill?
It should. Most Vineyard homes water lawn with metered city water, so every square foot of grass you replace is grass you stop paying to water. How much you save depends on how much lawn you swap and how heavily you watered before.
Is turf a good choice with dogs?
Yes, if it is built for them. You want fast-draining backing, an odor-control infill and a base that rinses through. On Vineyard's slow-draining soil, we add drainage under pet areas so you can hose it off and it actually drains.

Your dream yard. Done right. Done on time.
