Landscaping in Vineyard

Small yards on lake ground

Vineyard went from 139 residents in 2010 to 12,543 in 2020, and much of that growth is new building on the old Geneva Steel site along the east shore of Utah Lake. Most yards here are newer, a lot of them sit on smaller lots inside an HOA, and the ground is about as flat as Utah County gets.

Two things shape almost every job. The soil near the lake is fine silt and clay, and the Utah Geological Survey notes high groundwater is common close to the lake, so drainage and base prep decide whether a patio or lawn lasts. And most homes have no secondary water. Lawns run on metered city water, so the sprinkler design shows up on your bill.

We build for both, and for how you use a smaller yard: shade, privacy, a real patio, turf where the kids play and a front yard that looks finished on less water. We have brought that same care to 200+ projects across Utah County.

Vineyard sits at an elevation of about 4,521 feet on the east shore of Utah Lake, much of it built on the old Geneva Steel site, and most homes water their yards with metered city water because the city's pressurized irrigation serves only certain institutional properties.

What Vineyard yards deal with

The local problems, and how we handle them

Flat lots, slow drainage

Vineyard is close to dead flat, and lake silt drains slowly. Water with nowhere to go sits by the foundation and under the lawn. We set the grade so the yard falls away from the house and add drains where slope alone will not do it.

City water on the lawn

Most Vineyard homes have no secondary irrigation, so the lawn runs on metered drinking water. We zone the system for sun and shade, put beds on drip and set smart controllers so the yard stays green without a shock in July.

Small yards, close neighbors

Newer lots, a 6 foot limit on back fences and two-story homes next door mean privacy and shade take planning. Pergolas, the right trees and a smart layout make a small yard feel like your own space.

Vineyard's posted rules cap rear and side fences at 6 feet and front fences at 42 inches. A retaining wall over 4 feet generally needs a permit under the state residential code the city uses. We confirm current rules with Vineyard and your HOA on every job.

Planting that lasts here

Planting for zone 7a and lake soil

Vineyard sits in USDA zone 7a, and the last spring frost usually comes around late April, so tender plants wait until then. Utah soils run alkaline and the lake silt here holds water, so we pick plants that handle high pH and wet feet, and we keep thirsty ones out of the soggy corners.

On new lots the ground is often packed from construction. We loosen it, add screened topsoil and group plants by how much water they need, so drip runs the beds and the lawn gets its own zones. The city's General Plan pushes water-wise, Localscapes-style yards, and we design front yards that look full that way.

Neighborhoods we work

All over Vineyard

We work across Vineyard: Edgewater, the Geneva area, The Forge district, around the UVU West Campus area and the growing Downtown Vineyard, and out near parks like Sunset Beach Park, Gammon Park and Vineyard Grove Park.

Townhome patio or single-family backyard, the first step is the same. Jackson comes out, looks at your ground and gives you an honest number in writing.

"Jackson and his crew did a phenomenal job on our back yard. I had a vision and they brought it to life. We had them do a retaining wall, grading, underground trampoline, sprinkler system, and sod. They met deadlines, communication was on point, and the whole crew was friendly.…"

Vineyard questions

What Vineyard homeowners ask us

Does Vineyard have secondary irrigation water?
Not for most homes. The city runs pressurized irrigation only for certain institutional properties, so most yards water with metered city drinking water. There are no on and off dates, which is why efficient sprinklers and drip save real money here.
Do I need a permit for a retaining wall in Vineyard?
Vineyard uses the Utah state residential code, and under it a wall over 4 feet from the bottom of the footing generally needs a permit. A shorter wall holding back a load can need one too. We confirm the current rule with Vineyard before we build.
How tall can a fence be in Vineyard?
Six feet is the cap for back and side yards, and front yard fences top out at 42 inches, per the city's posted rules. Corner lots also have sight triangles that limit anything over 2 feet. Your HOA may add its own style rules on top.
How much lawn can I have in a new Vineyard yard?
Lawn rules for new yards are tightening across Utah County, and Utah law limits how much non-water-wise landscaping an HOA can require. Rules change, so we confirm the current limits with Vineyard and your HOA before we design.
