Topsoil and Materials in Payson

Good soil on top of Payson ground

Most Payson yards need help on top. Down on the valley floor, the native ground is Lake Bonneville clay and silt that packs hard and drains slowly. Up on the east bench it is gravelly fan soil, with more rock than dirt in places. You will not grow a thick lawn on either one without help. A layer of clean, screened topsoil gives roots something to work with, and it is one of the cheaper ways to make the whole yard do better.

We deliver and spread topsoil, landscape rock, bark mulch, fill dirt and road base across Payson. Spreading matters as much as the soil. Dumped in a pile and raked out by hand, it ends up thick in one spot and thin in another, and it never bonds with the ground under it. We rip or till the top of the native soil first, then spread and grade the new layer to its final height.

Rock and mulch get chosen with the water in mind. Payson's very hard water leaves white scale on dark rock wherever sprinklers hit it, so we keep spray heads out of rock beds and run drip there instead. Road base goes under patios, paths and RV pads, compacted in layers. Jackson can help you work out how many yards you need, so you are not paying for two loads when one would do.

Payson has two quirks an outside crew misses: very hard culinary water, around 11.7 grains a gallon, that scales up sprinkler heads, and a secondary system that carries canyon sediment, so filtration matters here.

The Payson challenges

What goes wrong with soil and rock in Payson

Clay packed hard by equipment

On the Payson flats, clay gets packed by trucks, mowers and years of foot traffic. Lay new topsoil right on top of it and water stops at the line between the two layers. Roots stay shallow, and the lawn burns out the first hot week of August.

Too much rock on the bench

East bench soil under Mount Nebo can be more cobble than dirt in the top foot. Grass and shrubs struggle in it, and it is close to impossible to rake smooth. It needs the rock picked out, a deeper layer of topsoil on top, or both.

Cheap loads full of weeds

Not all topsoil is screened. A cheap load can carry rocks, roots, clay clods and weed seed. You find out a month later when the weeds come up through the new lawn, and by then the soil is already spread and seeded.

Rock beds that turn white

Spray heads that hit dark landscape rock leave a white crust behind with Payson's hard water. The rock you paid for looks ten years old in one summer. Sediment from the secondary water adds a dusty film on top of that.

The J&H approach

How we deliver and spread in Payson

1 How we handle it

Screened soil, checked on arrival

We use screened topsoil, so you are not paying to haul rocks and roots. Fill dirt, road base and rock come from suppliers we know. If a load looks wrong when it shows up, it does not go on your yard.

2 How we handle it

Ripping the ground before spreading

We loosen the top of your native clay or bench soil before the new soil goes down, so the two mix a little at the line. Water and roots can then move down instead of stopping. Then we spread, grade and roll it.

3 How we handle it

Right material for each spot

Topsoil goes where you plant and grow grass. Road base goes under hardscape and parking. Rock and mulch go in beds on drip, not spray. We help you pick sizes and colors that fit the house and hold up to Payson water.

Payson questions

Topsoil and Materials in Payson: what people ask

How much topsoil do I need?
It depends on the area and the depth. A lawn needs a few inches, and beds want more. Send us the measurements and we will do the math with you, or Jackson can measure it on site. We would rather order the right amount than have you pay to haul extra.
Do you deliver topsoil anywhere in Payson?
Yes. We deliver all over Payson, from the Peteetneet flats to the east bench and out toward Spring Lake and the Salem and Santaquin edges. We can dump it where you want it or spread it for you.
What is the difference between topsoil and fill dirt?
Topsoil is screened soil with organic matter, made to grow grass and plants. Fill dirt is for building up grade under things, like behind a wall or under a patio base. Using fill where you plan to grow a lawn is a common mistake in new Payson yards.
Should I use rock or mulch in my beds?
Mulch holds moisture and keeps the soil cooler, so plants like it. Rock lasts longer and stays put on slopes. In Payson either one works best with drip lines under it, since spray heads leave hard water scale on rock and waste water on both.

Your dream yard. Done right. Done on time.
