Landscape Design in Mapleton

Designing a big Mapleton lot as one piece

The hardest part of designing a Mapleton yard is the size. On a lot from a third of an acre up to a couple of acres, you cannot treat every square foot the same. Lawn and planting everywhere would cost a fortune to install and a lot of water to keep alive. A good plan puts the polish near the house and lets the outer ground stay simpler.

So we design in rings. Close to the house: patio, fire, lawn, planting and lights. A step out: trees, shrubs, maybe a court, or a garden behind deer fence. Farther out: native and low-water cover, pasture or gravel that blends into the Maple Mountain foothills. Each ring gets its own sprinkler zones, timed for gravelly bench soil and the mid-April to mid-October water season.

Our own crew builds it, too. Jackson and the team have finished 200+ projects across Utah County, and on big lots the biggest risk is a plan that gets lost between designer and builder. We draw it, price it and build it, often in phases over a couple of seasons, with a written number for each phase. Phase one is usually grade, mainlines and the spaces by the back door.

Mapleton is big-lot country under Maple Mountain, a lot of it horse property, where the bench slopes on gravel fan soil and the deer come down out of the foothills in winter.

The Mapleton challenges

What a Mapleton design has to solve

Too much yard to finish at once

Big Mapleton lots swallow a budget fast. Without a plan, people finish the front, run out of money, and leave the back as weeds for years. We design the whole property and mark which phase each piece belongs to, so the yard grows in the right order.

Deer in the plant list

Mule deer come down from the foothills in winter and browse ornamentals. A design that ignores them turns into a buffet by February. We put more of what deer tend to pass over in open areas and keep the deer favorites inside fenced spaces.

Horses, trailers and a yard

On horse property, the yard shares space with a barn, a paddock and a trailer turnaround. Lawn where a trailer swings gets torn up every time. We lay out the working side and the living side so each one has its own room.

Slope you are not allowed to touch

Mapleton protects ground at 30 percent slope or more in its CE-1 zone. A design that puts a patio there will never get built. We map the steep ground first and design around it, often with native planting that helps hold the hillside.

The J&H approach

How we design and build a Mapleton yard

1 How we handle it

Walk the whole property

We walk from the house to every fence line with you, looking at slope, soil, views, animals and where water goes now. The steep ground, the deer paths and the long sprinkler runs all get noted before we draw a line.

2 How we handle it

Plan by rings and phases

The plan puts high-use spaces near the house and simpler, low-water ground farther out. Each area has a phase and a price, so you can build the core this year and the rest when you are ready.

3 How we handle it

One crew, start to finish

Our crew builds what we drew. When the excavator finds a boulder or a soft spot, the people who designed the yard are on site to adjust it the same day, and you hear about it from us first.

Mapleton questions

Landscape Design in Mapleton: what people ask

How do you design a yard on a two-acre lot?
We do not treat every inch the same. The area near the house gets the patio, lawn and planting. The outer ground gets native, low-water cover or pasture. That keeps install cost and water use sane on a big Mapleton property.
What grows well in Mapleton?
Mapleton runs USDA zone 6b to 7a, a little cooler up on the bench, with alkaline, gravelly soil. Hardy shrubs, ornamental grasses and perennials that handle cold and high pH do well. In open areas we favor plants deer tend to skip.
Can the design include a garden the deer cannot reach?
Yes. We often wrap a vegetable or flower garden in tall deer fence and keep the rest of the yard open. Your roses and tomatoes stay safe, and the rest of the property still feels open to the mountain.

Your dream yard. Done right. Done on time.
