Backyard Remodel in Provo

Remodeling a Provo backyard the right way

A full backyard remodel is usually round two for a Provo home. The first yard went in when the house was built, sometimes decades ago, and it shows: a small concrete patio by the back door, a lawn that slopes the wrong way, a sprinkler system patched so many times nobody knows where all the valves are. You are ready for a yard you actually live in from May through October.

What makes a Provo remodel last is building every piece for the ground it sits on. On valley clay, the patio and pool deck need a deep compacted base so they do not heave. On bench lots in Edgemont and Rock Canyon, the yard often has to be terraced to make flat space at all. The secondary water season shapes how the new lawn and beds are zoned, and a frost that can reach the second week of May sets when the planting goes in.

We have built more than 200 projects across Utah County, and the remodels that come out best are the ones planned as a whole yard. Jackson walks it with you, the team draws one plan for the patio, fire feature, pergola, pool area, planting and lighting, and the same crew builds it. You get one person to call and one honest price in writing.

Provo runs from the Utah Lake flats up to the Rock Canyon bench, so one side of town is heavy clay and the other is gravel, and the yard has to be built for the ground it actually sits on.

The Provo challenges

What a Provo remodel runs into

Old grading under a new yard

Older Provo yards have often settled back toward the house. If a new patio just follows the old grade, it sends water straight at the foundation. We reset the grades across the whole yard before building, so the new pieces all drain away from the house.

Getting equipment into tight lots

Many Provo lots, especially older ones near downtown and BYU, have narrow side yards, mature trees and fences right on the line. Getting a mini excavator and pallets of pavers to the backyard takes planning. We map access before we quote, so you do not get a surprise charge halfway through.

Pool decks on clay

A pool and its deck are heavy, and the clay around them moves with water and frost. A deck that settles away from the coping leaves a gap that only grows. We build the deck base for the clay and keep water draining away from it, not into it.

Power and gas planned too late

Landscape lighting, outlets for an outdoor kitchen and gas for fire features are easy to run before the patio goes in. Remodels that add them later end up cutting through new pavers. We plan every line in the first drawing.

The J&H approach

How we run a Provo remodel

1 How we handle it

Design the whole yard first

We draw the patio, fire, shade, water features, planting and lighting together, with grading and drainage underneath it all. You see where everything goes, how it connects, and what each piece costs before we break ground on any of it.

2 How we handle it

Build from the ground up

Grading, drainage, utility runs and sprinkler mainlines go in first. Then walls, base and hardscape. Planting and lighting finish it. That order keeps us from tearing up new work, and it is how the yard stays solid on Provo clay.

3 How we handle it

One crew, start to finish

Our own crew builds the whole job, start to finish. Jackson stays your contact from the first walk-through to the final sprinkler check. If something changes once we dig, you hear about it from him before the work moves forward.

Provo questions

Backyard Remodel in Provo: what people ask

How long does a full backyard remodel take?
It depends on the size and what is going in. A patio-and-planting remodel moves much faster than one with a pool, walls and an outdoor kitchen. We give you a schedule along with the quote, planned around Provo's late frost and the secondary water season.
When should I start planning a remodel?
Earlier than most people think. Spring and early summer fill up fast in Provo. Designing over the winter lets us start building as soon as the ground thaws and dries out, so you are using the yard by summer instead of watching a crew in August.
Can you work around my existing pool or patio?
Yes. If the pool or patio is solid, we design around it and tie it into the new yard so it looks planned. If the deck has already settled on the clay, we will show you where and give you the option to rebuild just that part.
How do you price a premium remodel?
After Jackson walks the yard, we price it in writing with each piece broken out: grading, walls, hardscape, fire, shade, planting, lighting and irrigation. You can see where the money goes and decide what to build now and what can wait for a second phase.

Your dream yard. Done right. Done on time.
