Topsoil and Materials in Mapleton

Material for big Mapleton yards

Mapleton's east bench is gravel and cobble that washed down off Maple Mountain. It drains fast, which keeps roots from drowning, but it holds very little water or food for plants. A lawn on raw bench gravel dries out between waterings. So most Mapleton yards need good topsoil where grass and beds go, and plenty of it, because the lots are big.

Volume is the other half of the job. On a third of an acre to two acres, the yards of material add up fast. We plan loads so trucks are not making extra trips, figure out where material can be dropped along a long driveway or through a pasture gate, and use loaders and smaller machines to spread it where trucks cannot reach. On horse property, we keep heavy trucks off the paddock.

We also bring road base for driveways, trailer pads and patio bases, fill for grading, landscape rock and mulch. On open bench ground the wind can lift light bark, so we lean toward heavier mulch or rock in exposed spots. Everything gets spread and graded so water moves away from the house and the barn, and the leftover gets hauled off so you are not stuck with a pile by the shop.

Mapleton is big-lot country under Maple Mountain, a lot of it horse property, where the bench slopes on gravel fan soil and the deer come down out of the foothills in winter.

The Mapleton challenges

Soil and delivery problems on Mapleton lots

Gravel that will not hold water

Native Mapleton bench soil is coarse and rocky, and water runs right through it. Lawns and beds on that soil need more water and still look tired in July. A layer of screened topsoil with compost holds moisture near the roots, so you water less and the yard looks better.

Big volumes on big lots

A Mapleton lawn area can take many truckloads of topsoil. Order too little and the job stalls halfway. Order too much and you pay to haul it off. We measure each area, work out the yards needed, and stage deliveries so the crew never sits waiting.

Access across the property

Long driveways, gates, buried lines and paddocks all limit where a loaded truck can go. Drive a heavy truck over a soft spot or a shallow line and you have a new problem. We map access first and use smaller machines for the last stretch.

Rock that needs picking

Spreading topsoil over a bed of cobbles leaves a thin layer that dries fast and bumps up the lawn. On the Mapleton bench we rake and pick the bigger rock first, then spread, so the topsoil sits on an even surface.

The J&H approach

How we deliver and spread on a big lot

1 How we handle it

Measure and plan the loads

We measure every area that gets material and work out the volumes. You get a written count of yards of topsoil, rock, mulch and base, plus a delivery plan that fits your driveway and gates.

2 How we handle it

Prep the ground first

We clear rock and debris, loosen the native gravel, and set rough grade before topsoil goes down. That way the new layer ties into the ground below it and drains the way it should, with no hard line for roots to stop at.

3 How we handle it

Spread it where it belongs

Topsoil for lawn and beds, rock on slopes and windy spots, mulch in sheltered beds, and road base under pads and drives. We spread and grade it all, and leave the yard ready for sod, seed or plants.

Mapleton questions

Topsoil and Materials in Mapleton: what people ask

Do I need topsoil on gravel soil in Mapleton?
For lawn and planting beds, yes. Bench gravel drains so fast that grass and shrubs dry out between waterings. Screened topsoil blended into the top of the native ground gives roots something that holds water. Native and low-water areas can often go without.
Can you deliver road base for a trailer pad?
Yes. Road base compacts hard and drains, which is what a horse trailer or RV pad needs. We grade the pad, lay base in lifts and compact each one, so it holds up under a loaded trailer in wet spring weather.
Will wind blow my mulch around?
On open Mapleton lots it can, especially light bark. In exposed areas we use rock or a heavier shredded mulch with good edging. In beds tucked next to the house or behind a fence, regular mulch works fine.
