Landscape Design in Woodland Hills

A plan that starts with the hill

Most Woodland Hills lots are big, often half an acre or more, and that is a lot of ground to plan piece by piece. People who build a patio one year, a wall the next and a lawn after that often end up tearing out the first job to fix the drainage for the third. One plan for the whole yard is how you avoid paying twice on a hillside lot.

A good plan here maps a lot of things before it shows a single plant. Where the septic tank and drain field are. Which way the slope sheds snowmelt. Which parts need walls, and whether any will top 4 feet. How the lot sits in the city's fire guide zones, from 0 to 5 feet off the house, 5 to 30 feet, and 30 to 100 feet and beyond. And how the yard gets watered, since every gallon here goes through a city meter.

Then comes the part you see. Views across Utah Valley toward Timpanogos, outdoor rooms cut into the slope, native maple and Gambel oak at the edges, and plants that deer and elk mostly leave alone. We draw it, price it in phases if you need to, and build it with our own crew, so nothing gets lost between a designer and a separate builder.

Woodland Hills rises about 1,200 feet from its lowest homes to its highest, most lots run on septic, every yard drinks metered city water and the whole town is treated as wildland-urban interface, so a yard here gets planned around slope, drain field and fire before anything else.

Know your Woodland Hills ground

Elevation
About 5,000 to over 6,200 feet
Ground
Rocky, well-drained foothill soil on steep slopes, with mapped landslide, alluvial-fan and fault hazards in parts of town
Secondary irrigation
Woodland Hills runs no secondary irrigation, so every yard waters on metered city culinary water
Growing season
USDA zone 6b, last frost mid to late May
Wall permits
In Woodland Hills a retaining wall over 4 feet, or steeper than 2 to 1, needs engineering and inspection, and a lot with overall slope over 15 percent needs a geotech report

The Woodland Hills challenges

What a Woodland Hills design has to solve

Water you pay for by the gallon

Woodland Hills does not run a secondary irrigation system, so lawns and beds drink the same metered water as your kitchen. The city's own General Plan says a 10,000 square foot bluegrass lawn uses about 250,000 gallons over a 25-week season, against 75,000 or less for native xeriscape.

Deer, elk and a short season

Zone 6b, a last frost in mid to late May and long snow cover cut the plant list down fast. Then deer and elk prune whatever is left. A design that copies a valley plant list will look thin by its second summer up here.

Fire zones around the house

The whole city is treated as wildland-urban interface. The General Plan's guide asks for no flammable plants in the first 5 feet, mowed grass and pruned trees from 5 to 30 feet, and thinned, well-spaced plantings beyond that. A good design builds those zones in from day one.

Septic fields and fault lines

About three-fourths of the town is on septic, and an active fault trace crosses the city. Patios, walls, trees and deep roots have to stay off drain fields, and some lots need a natural hazard study before building. Those limits shape the layout more than taste does.

The J&H approach

How we design a Woodland Hills yard

1 How we handle it

Walk the lot with Jackson

Jackson walks the lot with you and marks the slope, the septic system, the views and where the snow drifts. We talk through how you want to use the yard, what you want to spend and what can wait for a later phase.

2 How we handle it

Design around water and fire

Lawn goes only where you will use it, beds get drip and slopes get native or deer-resistant plants. Stone and pavers go closest to the house, and the planting opens up the farther it gets from the walls.

3 How we handle it

One crew builds it

Our crew builds the plan from grading to the last plant, in phases if that fits your budget. Walls, sprinklers and planting all follow one set of drawings, so nothing has to be torn out and redone later.

Woodland Hills questions

Landscape Design in Woodland Hills: what people ask

Should I design the whole yard if I can only build part of it?
Yes, on a hillside lot especially. Grading and drainage for the whole yard affect every piece of it. A full plan lets you build in phases, maybe the patio this year and the back slope next year, without redoing work. We price each phase so you know what is coming.
Which plants hold up to deer here?
No plant is fully deer-proof, but many natives and tough ornamentals get browsed far less. We lean on plants suited to zone 6b and rocky, well-drained soil, and we fence the few things deer love, like young trees and vegetable beds, until they are big enough to handle it.
Can a design lower my water bill?
It usually can. The city's General Plan suggests Localscape style yards, drip irrigation and less Kentucky bluegrass, and its own numbers show native xeriscape using a fraction of the water a bluegrass lawn needs. We keep lawn where you play and use drip and native plants everywhere else.

Your dream yard. Done right. Done on time.
