Hardscaping and Concrete in Orem

Orem patios that hold up and trim the water bill

In Orem, every square foot of lawn runs on culinary water. There is no secondary system here, so the grass out back drinks the same treated water you cook with, billed on a tiered rate. That changes how we think about hardscape. A patio, a paver walkway or an outdoor kitchen is a place to sit, sure. It is also lawn you stop paying to water every July and August.

The ground under it is the catch. Orem sits on the old Provo Bench at about 4,767 feet, on heavy Lake Bonneville clay with a pH that runs up past 8. That clay packs down, drains slowly and heaves when it freezes. Put pavers on a thin sand bed over it and you will see humps and gaps by the second spring. The base is where the money goes, even though nobody ever sees it once the stone is down.

We have built more than 200 projects across Utah County, and the Orem patios that last all share one thing: the base was dug and packed for clay before a single paver went down. Jackson plans the patio with your sprinklers in mind too, so the old lawn zones under it get capped or reworked instead of spraying your new stone every morning at 5 a.m.

Orem is the one town around here with no secondary water, so the sprinkler design shows up on your culinary bill in a way it does not for the neighbors.

The Orem challenges

Hardscape problems we see in Orem yards

Bench clay that heaves

Orem's clay holds water and expands when it freezes. A patio on shallow base rises in January and settles back in April, landing a little more out of line each year. Steps pull away from the house, pavers rock underfoot, and the joint sand washes out of the gaps.

Old sprinkler lines under new stone

When a patio replaces lawn, the old sprinkler lines are still down there. Left alone, they leak under the pavers, soak the base and waste culinary water you are paying tiered rates for. Capping and rerouting them is part of the hardscape job, not a separate one.

Big shade trees and old roots

Plenty of established Orem yards have large shade trees that went in when the neighborhood was new. Their roots lift concrete walks and patios over time, and digging too close can kill the tree. Patio placement and base depth near a big tree need a plan before the saw comes out.

Evening wind and fire features

Homes on the east side, toward Provo Canyon and the Timp foothills, catch gusts coming down the canyon in the evening. An open fire pit in the wrong spot throws sparks and smoke right at the house. Placement, and sometimes a low seat wall on the windward side, makes it usable.

The J&H approach

How we build Orem hardscape

1 How we handle it

Deep base over the clay

We excavate the soft clay, lay geotextile fabric, and compact road base in thin lifts. Pavers or concrete go on top of that, never on native dirt. That is what keeps an Orem patio flat through a winter of freezing and thawing.

2 How we handle it

Rework the water around it

We cap or reroute the old lawn zones, switch nearby beds to drip, and pitch the patio so it sheds water away from the house. Less water reaching the patio base means less heave, and a smaller culinary bill on top of it.

3 How we handle it

Fire and kitchens sited for wind

Fire features get placed out of the evening wind, with gas run before the base goes down. Outdoor kitchens sit on their own footings. Lighting and outlets are drawn into the plan from the start, so nobody cuts new pavers later.

Orem questions

Hardscaping and Concrete in Orem: what people ask

Will a patio really lower my Orem water bill?
It can. Every square foot of lawn you replace with hardscape is a square foot you stop watering with culinary water. On a tiered rate, cutting the heavy summer use helps the most. We also fix the sprinkler zones around the new patio so nothing is spraying the stone.
Pavers or stamped concrete in Orem?
Pavers handle Orem clay better because they flex, and a section that settles can be lifted and reset. Stamped concrete looks clean and usually costs less up front, but a crack in it is permanent. On a well-built base both last. We help you weigh it for your yard and budget.
Do I need a permit for a patio in Orem?
A ground-level patio usually does not, but gas lines, electrical work and some covered structures can. We check with Orem City Building Safety before we start, because rules change and it is your property that has to pass inspection when you sell.
Can you build a patio around my big trees?
Yes, with care. We keep the base shallower near major roots, use pavers instead of a solid slab when that helps, and pull the patio edge back far enough to protect the tree. If a tree is already lifting concrete, we will talk through your options honestly.
