Backyard Remodel in Cedar Hills

A backyard the whole family uses

Plenty of Cedar Hills backyards got finished fast when the house was new: a square of lawn, a small slab and a fence. Families grow, and the yard does not keep up. A remodel takes that tired layout and rebuilds it around how you live now, with real room to eat outside, a place for the kids to play and shade for the hot afternoons.

On the bench, a remodel almost always runs into grade. Backyards tilt toward the valley, so a bigger patio or a sport court means moving dirt and often building a wall. In Cedar Hills, even a wall under 48 inches needs an installation permit, and a new patio, pergola or hot tub needs one too. We fold those into the plan from the first sketch so nothing stalls halfway.

A remodel is also the right time to fix the water. The old system was likely laid out before secondary water was metered here. We rezone it, move beds to drip and pull the lawn back to where it gets used. You get a backyard that looks finished and costs less to keep green each summer. Your dream yard. Done right. Done on time.

Cedar Hills calls itself Utah's mile-high city, a family town on the bench at the mouth of American Fork Canyon where even a short retaining wall needs a permit, the secondary water is metered, and hillside lots in The Cedars and Canyon Heights follow their own grading rules.

Know your Cedar Hills ground

Elevation
About 4,900 to 5,300 feet, depending on the lot
Ground
An old Lake Bonneville shoreline bench and alluvial fan, so the ground can change from one lot to the next
Secondary irrigation
Cedar Hills runs its own pressurized irrigation, usually April 15 to October 15, and since July 1, 2025 bills it by actual use
Growing season
USDA zone 7a, last frost late April
Wall permits
In Cedar Hills fences and retaining walls need an installation permit, even walls under 48 inches, walls over 4 feet need a professional engineer's stamp, and H-1 hillside slopes of 30 percent or more stay natural

The Cedar Hills challenges

What makes a Cedar Hills remodel harder

Getting into the backyard

Many homes have tight side yards, and some lots drop off at the back. Getting a skid steer, a concrete pump or a pallet of pavers back there takes planning. We work out access before we price it, so the bid already covers the hand work or the pump.

Old walls and old drainage

Taking out a tired patio often turns up a short block wall with no drain behind it, or a downspout piped to nowhere. We would rather find those on the walkthrough than mid-build. Some get rebuilt, some get a new drain line, and you know which before we start.

Working around what you love

Mature trees, a play set the kids still use or a newer fence often stay. We fence off root zones, protect what stays and plan the new work around it. Saving the right tree can give you more shade than a new pergola would.

Neighbors close on the slope

On a bench lot, the yard below sees everything you build and gets any water you shed. Grading and drainage have to keep runoff on your lot. Lights and tall structures get placed with the neighbors in mind, which keeps your HOA, if you have one, from getting calls.

The J&H approach

How we run a backyard remodel

1 How we handle it

Design it around your family

Jackson sits down with you and asks how the yard gets used now, who cooks, where the kids play and when you sit out. The design puts each part where it makes sense and shows the whole thing before anything gets torn out.

2 How we handle it

One price, one crew

You get one written price for the full remodel, broken out by part. Our own crew builds the hardscape, walls, sprinklers and planting in the right order, so the patio is not poured over a pipe that needs moving next month.

3 How we handle it

Permits handled up front

We prepare the installation permit plans for walls, patio, pergola or hot tub, mark the easement and setbacks, and get your HOA's sign-off if you have one. Work starts once the paperwork is clear, not before.

Cedar Hills questions

Backyard Remodel in Cedar Hills: what people ask

How long does a backyard remodel take in Cedar Hills?
It depends on size, permits and the season. A patio and planting job moves faster than a remodel with walls, a court and new sprinklers. Permits and HOA review add time up front. We give you a schedule with the quote and keep you posted if weather moves it.
Can we remodel in phases?
Yes. A lot of families start with the patio and sprinklers and add the court or pergola later. We design the whole yard first so sleeves, gas lines and power get run in the first phase. That way nothing finished has to be torn up to add the rest.
What does a full backyard remodel cost?
It ranges widely with size and what goes in. A patio and planting refresh sits on one end. A remodel with walls, a court, an outdoor kitchen and new sprinklers sits on the other. Jackson walks the yard and gives you a free written quote, so you are working with your real number.
